    Drama at table 19

    2018/10/30 | 16:17 by Playground Poker

At table 19, a recent hand started as a three-way battle between Bradley Smith, Edward Arnold and Schahin Ghiai. As we approached the table the board showed King of Hearts 5 of Clubs 7d, with Schahin utg.

Schahin checked, and Bradley bet 12,000, called by both Edward and Schahin. The turn was a 4 of Clubs.

Schahin checked again, and Bradley led out with a bet of 4,200. Edward casually tossed in a high denomination chip, indicating his call. Both players were raised by Schahin, as he made it 11,000 to go. This check-raise was too rich for Bradley’s blood, so when Edward called it was a showdown.

The river was dealt a 10 of Diamonds, after which Schahin shoved all in utg for 35,000. This set up a long period of contemplation for Edward, in which he almost folded, then put his cards down, then stood up, then sat down, then talked out the hand to himself. In the end, he convinced himself that his opponent could only have two pair, Queens and 4s. Unfortunately for him, he was wrong.

Edward: King of Diamonds 3 of Diamonds

Schahin: 6 of Clubs 8 of Hearts

Schahin had made his straight, and Edward lost half of his stack, frustrated with himself for taking the risk.

Francois Goulet, who has reached two final tables in 2018, in events at Binion’s and the Venetian in Las Vegas, just hit a set of tens.  Preflop, Goulet raised to 600 and both Francois Billard and David Ormsby called. Tony Guglietti then raised 2,200. Both Goulet and Ormsby called and Billard folded.

When the flop came down 9 of Hearts 6 of Spades 4 of Hearts Tony bet 3,000. Francois called and David folded.

The dealer flipped the turn: 3 of Clubs. Tony checked and Francois bet 3,500. Tony pondered for a while, but made the call. The river was the 10 of Diamonds and Tony bet 6,000. Without delay, Francois went all in, pushing all his 26,000 chips forward. Tony debated with himself for more than a minute before calling.  But Tony’s hand – Queen of Spades 9 of Diamonds – was no match for the pair of tens Francois was holding, which gave him the set.

Denis Simard was just eliminated from the WPT500 in 10th place. With a stack of 2,375,000, he moved all-in from under the gun, and was looked up by Dave Graham next to act.

Denis: 8 of Diamonds 8 of Hearts
Dave: King of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds

With only one over-card to Denis’ pair, Dave managed to improve to three-of-a-kind on the King of Hearts 3 of Clubs Queen of Hearts Jack of Clubs King of Spades board, bringing the WPT500 field down to the final table.

We missed the exact action, but Sergei Gurin was just eliminated in 11th place from the WPT500. With only a few blinds left he pulled the trigger with Jack of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds and was called by Jason Horned, who was holding Ace of Spades 4 of Hearts. The board ran out with 4 spades on it, ending Sergei’s tournament in 11th place for $14,250.

The WPT500 is now just one elimination shy of reaching the 9-handed final table.

After losing a massive pot to Trevor Argue not too long ago, Vasilios Gerontakos was grinding a short stack for a few orbits. He managed to find a double up versus Trevor before finding himself all-in and at risk again against his newly formed nemesis.

Vasilios was holding Ace of Hearts King of Spades and was up against Trevor’s 10 of Hearts Jack of Hearts, but Trevor managed to run a straight on the Jack of Clubs King of Diamonds Queen of Hearts 8 of Clubs 9 of Diamonds to bring the field closer to the elusive final table.

Vasilios was awarded $14,250 for his 12th place finish.

We are now in level 4, with less than an hour to go before the 45-minute lunch break. However, just prior to the start of level 4, notable player Maxime Heroux almost saw his day end early, as he found himself all in against Jeffrey Cormier.

When we joined the hand the board was showing Queen of Hearts 4 of Spades Jack of Diamonds 8 of Spades 6 of Hearts, and Maxime had shoved for his remaining stack, approximately 35,000. His opponent thought about it carefully, but ultimately decided to opt for caution, not wanting to cripple himself if he guessed wrong.

Jeffrey ended up folding, and Maxime won the pile of chips, totaling about 60,000. He immediately stood up from the table to stretch his legs and perhaps calm his nerves as well.
