One of the points of interest in the WSOP World Championship every summer is to note who is the last woman standing in the event – and at least until a woman wins the event outright, that will likely continue to be the case. As we surveyed the Tournament Hall, we noted that the two most recent “winners” of this distinction are both in the field today. These are just two of the strong group of women players in this event so far. Some of the other very strong competitors include Melanie Weisner, Laurence Grondin, Karine Broeckaert, Khaly Dang, Loni Harwood, and more.

    • Yuan Li finished in 105th place in 2017 and she joined the field today following a very impressive 3rd place finish in the WSOP-C Playground Main Event held here in September.
    • Kelly Minkin is also in the field today. She finished in 50th place in this year’s WSOP Main Event, and recently added a 3rd place finish to her poker resume as well, having gone deep in the WPT bestbet Bounty Scramble Main Event earlier in October.

The field at today’s WPT Main Event Day 1C is proving to be largest of all the stints thus far. There are already 267 entries and late registration is not scheduled to end for another 6 hours and 30 minutes. The total prize pool, so far, is $5,000,000. Here are some photos of the players chasing after a massive payout.

Big hand for Plante in the early going

We are already up to 265 entries for the day, the players keep arriving.

Just before the first break (after two 60-minute levels) there was a relatively large hand that took place on table 36. Santiago Plante and Mark Bradley were the ones battling it out, and we joined the action after the flop.

Flop: 5 of Spades 8 of Clubs 2 of Hearts

Santiago bet 1,000 utg and was raised to 3,000 by Mark. Santiago called. The turn was a Queen of Diamonds, which led to two checks. The river was an Ace of Spades, and Santiago made a sizable bet for this point in the tournament, 10,000. Without too much hesitation Mark called. Santiago showed his Ace of Spades Queen of Clubs for two pair, and Mark mucked. He told us he also had two pair, just not as large.

The loss definitely put a dent in Mark’s stack, but there remains plenty of poker left to play.

Soares leads the way after first break at WPT Main Event Day 1C

    2018/10/31 | 14:52 by Playground Poker

There are more than 263 entries in today’s WPT Day 1C stint, and late registration continues throughout Day 1C, so that number will continue to grow all the way until the end of level 8. During a fifteen minute break we did a quick chip count and determined that Sebastien Soares was the chip leader with 87,300. He holds a slight lead over Gerald Karlic whose stack measured 86,000 chips.

An event like this one always attracts a healthy contingent of top pros – but there are also a number of players that have achieved remarkable things in poker and aren’t household names – even in poker-playing households! Here is a sampling of these players in the field today.

    • Armand King – The Oyster King is easy to underestimate. He’s almost certainly the oldest player in the field, but age is just a number, and Armand clearly has the poker chops of a much younger man. He has final tabled major events here at Playground in the past, and even won a regional championship on the East Coast in 2017!
    • Robert Notkin – Dr Notkin is a regular visitor to big events hosted at Playground Poker Club and was the champion of the famous Canada Cup event that featured a 4-way all-in to end the tournament – perhaps the only time that has occurred in a major poker event.
    • Pierre-Paul Paulin – Pierre-Paul is a player with only a little over $120,000 in lifetime Live earnings, but in tournaments here at Playground, he is one of the most frequent players seen on daily leaderboards and he always seems to have a big stack. His largest single score here ($53,350) was a 2nd place finish in a $5K tournament in the World Cup of Cards in 2016.
    • Curt Kohlberg – Curt joins us from Boston and has been a regular big-event player here for several years. For a player who isn’t very well known, he’s amassed an amazing record over the years. He has over $3M in lifetime Live earnings according to Hendon Mob, including some huge scores in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and in Florida. Definitely not a player to be overlooked!
    • Said Michailidis – Said is a mainstay on the local tournament scene, and has always been recognized as a strong player, but early in 2018 he had a breakthrough with final table finishes in a Playground 1000 event and the 2018 WPT Fallsview Poker Classic in Niagara Falls.
    • Vineet Pahuja – one of poker-playing Pahuja family, Vineet hasn’t had the huge breakthrough that his brother Mukul has had, but nevertheless he has over $2M in lifetime Live earnings and has been a monster on the felts all over the East Coast for years now. Mention his name at Borgata and you’ll hear nothing but respect, according to reliable sources.
