Day 1 of the $10,000 + $300 High Roller tournament has officially come to a close.

Day 1 in the tournament saw a total of 55 entries (including 13 re-entries) take to the felts, but at the end of the day there were only 31 players left at their seats. At the top of the leaderboard is Tommy Nguyen, who currently has 119,800 chips. Right behind him is John Krpan with 102,000 and Erik Lemarquand with 101,000.

This event, which features a guaranteed $1,000,000 prize pool, allows for unlimited re-entries right into the beginning of level 13 on Day 2. Day 2 begins tomorrow at 2pm, which means that registration will remain open until 7:00pm. Judging by the interest in the event shown today by players in the room but who have not yet joined, tomorrow should see a steady stream of entries right until the end of the late registration period.

Below are some photos of our High Roller competitors. We’ll see them all tomorrow when they come back for Day 2!

Play continues in the High Roller tournament and with just over one level left to go on Day 1 and 4 levels of registration available on Day 2, there are 53 entries so far. 35 of those players are still seated at the tables, which are a who’s who of both local and international poker, both pro and recreational alike.

Some of the most recent entries Edward Lin, Ljubomir Josipic, and former Playground HR champion Samuel Chartier.

    Romero doubles up

James Romero recently joined table 65 and has just doubled through Erik Lemarquand to give his stack a healthy bump. We arrived at the table on the flop with the board reading 9 of Clubs King of Hearts 4 of Clubs, and James, who had been in the sb, bet 2,900 with less than 30K behind. Action moved on Erik, who spent some time considering his options before raising to 30,000 – enough to put James all in. James made the call.

James: Ace of Clubs King of Clubs
Erik: Ace of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds

Erik was in much worse shape than he bargained for – James had top pair but also the redraw to the nut flush. His final hand turned out to be even stronger than that as the turn and river each paired the board: King of Spades 4 of Diamonds, giving James the full house and a full double up through the chip leader.

The players in the High Roller event are taking a dinner break and while they were away from the 4 tables in action, we surveyed the stacks to find out who was leading to this point in the tournament. The current leader is Erik Lemarquand, a familiar face in big buy-in tournaments at Playground, and he is followed by Pegman Meleknia and Philippe “takechip” D’Auteuil.

Cards will be back in the air in about 5 minutes.
