    Our PLO Champion: Lynn Phan!

    2018/11/05 | 3:51 by Jôle Simard

Event #6 in the WPT Montreal Festival was a $1,100 buy-in PLO 1-day event with unlimited re-entries until the beginning of level 9. 104 entries joined the tournament, 28 of which came from re-entries. The action was relentless. Players were going all out, gunning for one of the 13 prizes on the board.

Piotr Siwiec came out of the gates like a thoroughbred and held on to his lead for the majority of the evening, until Frédéric Normand took it from him. Both players made the final table, but Siwiec left it early. Normand, however, after dwindling down to about 65K when 2 tables were left, came back with a vengeance and enjoyed the lead for a while at a 4-handed final table.

Lynn Phan took that from him, and kept climbing, doing an excellent job as chip leader. The pressure was constant, and she took out Frédéric Normand, then François Goulet.

In the end, it was her monster stack against Michael Khan’s 450K. Khan, who enjoyed the chip lead at one point on the final table, did a very good job of staying ahead of the other participants once Phan began to rise. He made it to the heads-up match, managed to double up his 450K, but fell to a higher flopped flush. Lynn Phan, who took out the last 3 players to bust, got the win that she deserved, without giving out any deal!

    Excellent performance!

Our $1,100 WPT PLO Champion: Lynn Phan – $28,300 and the stunning PLO trophy

    Runner-up: Michael Khan – $18,730

François Goulet and Michael Khan have been battling for an extra 6K in prize money, as Lynn Phan kept fulfilling her chip leader role.

After a few orbits of small ball poker, Goulet went all-in in on the turn, and Phan called.

Goulet: Queen of Clubs 2 of Hearts Jack of Spades 9 of Clubs
Phan: 4 of Hearts Jack of Clubs 3 of Spades Ace of Spades

Board: 5 of Clubs Ace of Clubs 10 of Hearts 2 of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds

Phan had made a straight on the turn, and managed to fade Goulet’s flush draw. Khan has 450K left, against Phan’s 2.6M.

    3rd place: François Goulet – $12,750

Excellent performance by Goulet, who picks up the first of three 5-digit prize!

Our 3 remaining players are now taking a short break. Lynn Phan has been keeping the post-flop pressure since Normand’s elimination, and her chances of taking down the title look very good. Here is the chip distribution:

After nearly 2 hours of 4-handed play, Frédéric Normand took his last breath. He played a very solid game, but Lynn Phan got the best of him.

She has been limping a lot of her range, and Normand took a slow approach to the hand when he flopped trips, hoping to get maximum value in position. Phan, however, turned gin:

Phan: Jack of Diamonds Jack of Clubs 6 of Clubs 8 of Spades

Board: 4 of Hearts 8 of Clubs 4 of Clubs Jack of Hearts 9 of Hearts

Normand had called 100K on the flop, 225K on the turn, and the remainder of his stack, not very confident at that point but announcing that he couldn’t fold. When he saw Phan’s hand, he showed a 9 and a 4, for trips turned boat on the river.

Phan now has a commanding lead over this 3-way match.

    4th place: Frédéric Normand – $9,000

    Great game!

Our 4 finalists are playing a grueling game of trenches, each pulling equally hard and exchanging chips, as the average number of big blinds per player slowly climbs to a more risk-inducing setup.

François Goulet managed to get quite a bit of chips from Michael Khan, but some of Frédéric Normand’s chips later refloated his stack.

Lynn Phan took a huge pot off Khan, after checking the nuts on the river, trying to get him to commit his remaining 600K. Khan did not bite, but Phan nevertheless took a nice lead, playing with almost half the chips in play.

On the second hand after the break, Jean-Serge Baril was on the button and looking at an unopened pot. He made it 40K to go. When Michael Khan 3bet hard, he committed his remaining chips, a little over 200K.

Baril: Ace of Diamonds King of Diamonds 5 of Spades 9 of Spades
Khan: Jack of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds Ace of Spades King of Hearts

Board: Jack of Spades 8 of Diamonds 2 of Diamonds 3 of Clubs 7 of Spades

Both players flopped a diamond draw, but the runout didn’t produce it and Baril was forced to leave the table, but not without a nice $6,600 5th place prize. Nice run!
