March Power Weekend Event #3 champion: Alexandre Renaud

    2018/03/23 - 20:53 by Shawn McCrory

Event #3 of the March Power Weekend, the Deepstack Turbo, was a great success that drew a large and diverse field. The Deepstack Turbo featured a $5,000.00 guarantee, but it was easily surpassed as 91 players made their way into the high-paced fray. The robust turnout generated a prize pool of nearly $8,000.00 to be divided between the top 12 finishers.

The story of this event falls into two main themes: the pace of play and the deals.

As a turbo tournament, the 15-minute blind levels make it more of a sprint than a marathon. And the play on display showed that the runners were racing to stay out ahead of the blinds. Particularly in the early levels, it seemed like most hands wound up with one or more players going all-in before the river for either maximum value or to steal as many chips as possible.

Deal-making is a common feature of tournament poker, but today’s event might have set a Playground record. When the field was down to 14 players-two off the money bubble-the players were about to leave on a break when Alexandre Renaud floated the notion of a multi-way deal. He proposed that everyone take a reasonable profit and that they leave a few thousand for the first and second place finishers. To the surprise of many, the players managed to find consensus and a deal was struck as play resumed. The final fourteen players agreed to take $400.00 each and leave significant prizes for first and second place. While it is surprising enough for that many players to reach a deal, what was more surprising that it was not the last deal of the day. When the field was down to four players, they agreed to take money off the first two places so that the third and fourth place finishers could take home a little more. The third deal of the day was concluded when three players remained; more money was taken off the first and second place prizes to give the third place finisher an extra $100.00.

In the end, Renaud’s deal-brokering ability nearly over-shadowed his poker skills. But emerging victorious in this event showed everyone that he knows how to play hold’em even better than he knows how to craft a deal. Congratulations!

The final table is now down to the final four players of the Deepstack Turbo. Since the blind levels have reached dizzying heights-two starting stacks is now one big blind-it is still anybody’s tournament.

The final four also managed to reach another deal to re-distribute the prize pool. According to their terms, a total of $300.00 was taken off the first two places so that the third and fourth place finishers will each receive $550.00

After concluding a 14-player deal in the Deepstack Turbo, a number of players were eliminated in short order, dropping the field from 14 to the final table in a matter of minutes.

The mood is fun and friendly among the finalists; all the remaining players are guaranteed at least $400.00 for their efforts this afternoon, easing the tension around the table. While the players all still have their eyes on the first place prize, the laughter at the table is a clear indication that everyone is enjoying their deep run in this event.

The players in the Deepstack Turbo have agreed to a deal that will see everyone take home something. The group of 14 were unanimous in their agreement to divide the prize pool so that the first and second place finishers will have a significant pay day while all the others will take home double the previous minimum prize.

Here are the new payouts according to their deal:

The Deepstack Turbo is now down to the final two tables, with 14 players remaining.

The players have extended their break to continue negotiations over a proposed deal that would see all the remaining players cash and leave a certain amount for the top two or three finishers.

With 19 players remaining, the Deepstack Turbo is down to its last two tables. Today’s starting field of 91 players has been quickly reduced (it’s a turbo!) to the final 19, after less than five hours of play.

The blinds are creeping up on the average stacks, who are now playing roughly 15 big blinds. This means that the margin for error is now razor thin, putting someone all in on virtually every hand.

Although most players aren’t particularly deep at this stage, the bubble is on the horizon as we are only seven places away from the money so expect everyone to dig in and wait for the best possible spot.
