Event # 1 champion: Giovanni Petrella

    2019/03/20 - 19:56 by Bob T

The day started at 11 this morning in the 1st event of the March Power Weekend, a $100 + $10 freezeout, which attracted 60 players, allowing it to surpass the guaranteed prize pool of $5,000, generating a total of $5,820 to be paid to the top 8 finishers.

The final table saw the two who were the chip leaders all afternoon, Giovanni Petrella and Ron S., holding a substantial lead over the others. As expected, the short stacks shoved away and the field started to narrow down.

Ron S. went on a crazy roller coaster ride, seeing his stack drop to 8k, then go back up to almost 300k, before busting out in 4th place.

Dylan Thibault, a regular visitor from Ontario who likes to come play most of the Playground events, made a solid deep run, just as he often does, but ultimately busted out in 3rd place ($910).

As play went heads up between Petrella and Bombardier, both players kept shoving with random hands, until finally, Petrella got the best of Bombardier, and became the event #1 Champion.

On the final hand of play, Richard Bombardier shoved his suited gapped connectors, 7 of Diamonds 5 of Diamonds, and was called light by Petrella holding 10 of Spades 6 of Diamonds.  Petrella announced “I’m not that strong”, but when he saw what he was up against, he then said “oh, I’m actually ahead”, and the dealer put out the board: Jack of Spades 6 of Clubs 3 of Hearts King of Diamonds 10 of Clubs.  Giovanni flopped a 6 but Richard gave him some sweat having flopped a gutty. With no help to Richard on the turn or river, that brought the tournament to a close, with Giovanni Petrella hitting two pair on the river and becoming the Event #1 $100 + $10 Champion.

Event #1 Champion: Giovanni Petrella $1,670

    Last Hand of Play:

    Runner-up: Richard Bombardier, $1,230

The roller coaster ride continues for Ron as he had dropped down to only 8k, but he has now climbed his way back up after a series of hands that culminated in flopping trip Q’s when he shoved AQ and was called by Giovanni holding QT.  Having had only 8k in chips just a few hands earlier, Ron has made it back all the way up to almost 300K!

Giovanni and Ron were the two chip leaders all day long.  The battle continued on the final table in classic fashion until the two of them hit a crazy hand.  On a Ace of Clubs 6 of Diamonds Ace of Hearts flop, Ron put Giovanni all in with his Ace of Spades 9 of Clubs, for flopped trip Aces!  Unfortunately for Ron, this was a massive cooler as Giovanni snapped with Ace of Diamonds 6 of Spades for a flopped boat!  Ron took it in stride, and like a true gentlemen, he exited in 4th place, smiling as he collected his $670 payout.

In true tournament spirit, Ron S. has been going for an official 6-flags roller coaster ride on this final table.

On a 6 of Spades 9 of Hearts 7 of Hearts flop, Ron’s chips got into the middle when he hit top pair with his King of Spades 9 of Spades, but, he was snap called by Dylan who had pocket rockets. The run out of 2 of Hearts Jack of Clubs was of no help to Ron, who was left holding just 8k at the end of the hand.

Stacks of white 5k chips keep moving back and forth between Ron S. and Richard Bombardier.  Ron, who has been in the lead for most of the day, had lost a good part of his stack. Both players got their chips into the middle on a 8 of Clubs 5 of Hearts 2 of Spades 6 of Spades 3 of Diamonds board with Ron holding 8 of Hearts 8 of Spades for a flopped set, while Richard had Ace of Hearts 6 of Hearts after hitting the turn with a pair and Ace kicker.

A few hands later, it was Richard’s turn to take back some white chip inventory, as his Queen of Hearts Queen of Clubs bested Ron who had Ace of Diamonds Jack of Hearts for top-top on a 6 of Hearts Jack of Diamonds 5 of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 5 of Diamonds board.

We have now lost Nicolas Barbeau in 6th ($370) followed by Said Nehme in 5th ($500)

Nick Nickoletopoulos woke up with a hand that seemed good enough to shove his remaining 36k. He had calls from both Ron S. and Richard Bombardier.

Flop: King of Spades 3 of Clubs Ace of Clubs and action went check-check between Bombardier and Ron S.

Turn: 2 of Hearts and again we had a check-check.

River: Ace of Diamonds and once again, check-check.

Nickoletopoulos opened his hand to reveal a monster, Queen of Clubs Queen of Diamonds, however as he was tabling his cards, Bombardier announced “I have an Ace”, and that sent Nick to the rail in 7th place ($270).
