Grand Prix Canada Champion: Cassidy Battikha

2017/05/02 - 5:50 by Playground Poker

Event 1 of the Playground Poker Spring Classic presented by partypoker LIVE was the $200 + $20 Grand Prix Canada, which featured a massive $500,000 guarantee. Through a total of 28 starting flights, including 17 online at partypoker.net and 11 live at Playground Poker Club, the combined number of entries was of 2,570, creating a prize pool slightly over the guarantee.

269 players returned to the felts on Sunday for Day 2 of this multi-flight event, all of which had already collected a min-cash of $400. 14 levels of play filtered the field down to just 38 finalists, who bagged and tagged their chips onto Day 3.

Leading the field at the start of Day 3 was pro Mike Leah, who was also one of 11 remaining players holding a Golden Chip, a promotion held for online qualifiers. The last player standing with a Golden Chip was awarded a cash bonus of $20,000, and the race was close all the way to the finish as 2 players amongst the final 4 were in contention.

Once the official 8-handed final table was formed, it was Cassidy Battikha who held the chip lead. Dilovan Hussein was the first eliminated from the final table, falling to the hands of Mike Leah. He was followed by Emmanuel Kyrkinis, who ran his pair of 6s into the pair of Kings of Kevin Zeidler. Shahar Ohaion picked up a 5-figure score after going down with Ace-King versus the pocket Kings of Cassidy.

5-handed action went on for the better part of two levels before Leandre St-Laurent hit the rail to the hands of Mike Leah. Cassidy was on the shorter end of the spectrum 4-handed, however he found a double up from Mike before taking him out a few hands later.

With Mike elimination in 4th place, Kevin Zeidler was awarded the $20,000 Golden Chip last longer. At this point the final 3 players then paused the clock and negotiated an ICM deal, leaving an additional $20,000 behind for the eventual winner. In the deal, Cassidy locked in $64,050, while Karim took $62,500 and Kevin $53,450.

Shortly after the deal, Cassidy scored a big double-up versus Karim with pocket Tens winning over pocket Sixes. Karim was crippled in the process, but before he found a hand to move his short stack in a huge pot occurred between his two opponents. Cassidy and Kevin formed 63-million chip pot, which represented roughly 80% of the chips in play. Cassidy had an Ace-high flush draw, and was up against a pair and a lower flush draw. The turn was a brick, but the river brought and Ace to give Cassidy a higher pair and the win. Kevin was eliminated, and heads-up play began with Cassidy holding a 10-to-1 chip advantage.

A few hands into heads-up play, Cassidy open-shoved with Jack of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds and Karim called with Queen of Diamonds 9 of Clubs. Cassidy found a pair on the 5 of Hearts Jack of Hearts 6 of Spades 5 of Spades 10 of Diamonds to win the pot, eliminate Karim and claim victory in the Grand Prix Canada!

Congratulations!

Following a 3-way deal, Cassidy Battikha found a big double-up through Karim with 10 of Hearts 10 of Diamonds over 6 of Hearts 6 of Diamonds to take over the chip lead. Moments later, Cassidy and Kevin found themselves in the biggest pot of the tournament.

With the board showing Queen of Hearts Jack of Spades 8 of Hearts, a raising war occurred resulting in a pot of roughly 63-million chips, or 80% of the chips in play! Cassidy tabled Ace of Hearts 2 of Hearts for the nut-flush draw, while Kevin turned over Jack of Hearts 9 of Hearts for a pair and a smaller flush draw. The 4 of Clubs brought no change on the turn, however Cassidy took the lead on the Ace of Spades river to win the pot, and eliminate Kevin in 3rd place.

Along with his locked-in prize money from the ICM deal, Kevin also won a $20,000 bonus for winning the partypoker Golden Chip Last Longer.

Action is now heads-up between Cassidy and Karim, with Cassidy holding the majority of the chips in play.

After Mike Leah was eliminated from the Grand Prix Canada, ending the $20,000 last-longer promotion from partypoker, the final 3 players decided to pause the clock to see if a deal can be negotiated. Striking a deal while the last-longer promotion was still ongoing would cancel the bonus, and therefore all deal-talk was quickly turned down leading up to this point.

Once the ICM numbers were given, the three finalists were happy to lock in their prizes and shake on the deal. The tournament stipulates that a percentage of the prize-pool must remain in play for the eventual winner, and so an additional $20,000 has been left on the table for the Grand Prix champion, while the rest of the prize pool was divided as indicated below. Action is now back underway in level 38 as we play towards a winner, who will also take home the Grand Prix Canada champion’s trophy.

  • Cassidy Battikha (30,485,000) – $64,050.00
  • Karim Abdelhamid (29,720,000) – $62,500.00
  • Kevin Zeidler (17,295,000) – $53,450.00

Congratulations!

Grand Prix Canada final 3

Kevin Zeidler wins the $20,000 partypoker last longer!

2017/05/02 - 4:37 by Playground Poker

Partypoker held a promotion for online qualifiers to the Grand Prix Canada in the form of a last-longer. The first 100 players to qualify a stack online onto Day 2 via their site were given a Golden Chip, and the last man standing would be awarded a bonus prize of $20,000 aside from their respective payout. This prize was an addition to the prize pool, and therefore not taken out from the prizes.

11 players returned to Day 3 with a Golden Chip, however the number quickly dropped as the day progressed. Once the 8-handed final table was formed, only two players remained in contention of winning the prize: Mike Leah and Kevin Zeidler. Both players were very healthy in chips, however after a few levels of play Mike dropped to the short end of the leaderboard. He was eventually eliminated from play in 4-handed action, and Kevin was therefore awarded the prize.

Action is still underway with 3 players remaining, but Kevin has locked in the extra $20,000 as he attempts to add another $100,000 to his payout.

Congratulations!

The most decorated player from this Grand Prix Canada final table has just been eliminated, as did his hopes of taking down the $20,000 last longer sponsored by partypoker. Mike Leah was one of two remaining players with a Golden Chip on this final table, and the last man standing was set to take home the bonus prize. With Mike’s recent elimination, it is Kevin Zeidler who won the $20,000 bonus.

Mike lost a good portion of his stack when he open shoved King of Hearts 5 of Clubs from the small blind in an unopened pot, putting pressure on shorter stack Cassidy Battikha in the big blind. With around 14bb in front of him, Cassidy made the call with Ace of Spades 3 of Diamonds and held on for the double up, leaving Mike with under 10bb.

An orbit later, action folded around to Mike in the small blind, and once again he moved all-in – this time as the shorter stack. He found a quick call from Cassidy and the two tabled their hands.

Mike: 10 of Clubs 9 of Clubs
Cassidy: Ace of Spades King of Clubs

Board: 4 of Spades 7 of Spades Jack of Spades 6 of Hearts Ace of Hearts

Mike was eliminated on the hand, taking home a $25,000 consolation prize for his efforts.

Leandre St-Laurent went on a tear in the second half of Day 2, building himself a monster stack in the process. He held the chip lead for several levels, until Mike Leah chipped his way into the lead in the final moments of Day 2 to bag the lead.

Leandre returned to the felts today second in chips, and remained fairly quiet throughout the night, maintaining a healthy stack until the field got near the final table. Once the 8-handed final table began, he found himself to be one of the shorter stacks, but managed to remain in the game until the tournament reached 5-way action.

With only 6 big blinds left, Leandre found a shoving hand from utg and pushed for 4,700,000. Mike Leah re-shoved from the cutoff for 8,200,000 and action closed heads-up.

Leandre: Ace of Clubs 4 of Spades
Mike: Ace of Spades King of Diamonds

Leandre couldn’t improve on the Jack of Clubs Queen of Spades 2 of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds 9 of Clubs board and was sent to the rail in 5th place, while Mike picked up some much needed ammunition.

5th place: Leandre St-Laurent – $14,580.00
