On the last hand of level 12, once most players had already left the table to enjoy their 15-minute break, Jean-Francois Langevin was still in his seat and heads-up in a big pot. With 2 of Clubs 10 of Clubs Jack of Clubs 2 of Hearts showing on the board, Jean-Francois quickly called the all-in of his opponent with the stone-cold nuts as he flipped over 2 of Diamonds 2 of Spades. His opponent tabled a drawing-dead Ace of Clubs Jack of Diamonds and had vanished before the river was dealt out. With that pot, Jean-Francois climbed to the top of the leaderboard with a stack just shy of 300K.

Only a handful of players join him in the 6-figure mark, with Eric Leblond hot on his tail. Here are the top counts entering level 13:

Day 1B is into level 9, and nearly half of the field has already been eliminated. Play will continue until only 10 players remain. A short break will take place a touch past 11pm, at which point we will publish an update on the leaderboard. Below are some photographs taken during levels 7 and 8:

Late registration has come to a close in Day 1B, and this second live flight attracted 93 players, bringing the live tally up to 149 players with 9 more live flights to go.

A total of 28 starting flights are scheduled for this $500K guaranteed event, part of which can be found online on partypoker.net. So far 51 players have locked in a seat through the 11 starting flights which have already been completed online, as well as 6 from the first live starting flight from earlier today.

With 93 players signed up for Day 1B, action will continue tonight until only 10 players remain, who will then bag and tag their chips onto Day 2. Any player who qualifies a stack onto Day 2 automatically receives a $400 cash prize, making it well worth the while to play multiple starting flights.

Through 6 levels of play, it is Jean-Francois Langevin who leads the field, being the only player above the 100K mark so far. A few other players are also off to a strong start, listed below:

Day 1a is a wrap

2017/04/25 - 19:55 by Jôle Simard

Day 1a, the opening flight of the Grand Prix Canada Event, just concluded with Michel Georges Alam bagging the biggest stack, as a result of the last hand of play. His Queen of Spades Queen of Clubs held up nicely against his opponents’ Jack of Clubs Jack of Spades and 6 of Diamonds 5 of Diamonds. It is in that matter that Sylvain Lepage and Terence Caulcutt were eliminated on the qualification bubble.

The following table lists our Day 2 qualifiers and their reported stacks. These players are the first to qualify through a Live Day 1, and their names are added to the 51 online qualifiers that have been rounded so far. Many more will join this club, as 15 more starting flights will be held throughout the week, both online and live.

The Grand Prix Canada continues with Day 1B at 7pm tonight, and this is the second of 11 live starting flights for this massive $500,000 guaranteed event. In addition to the live flights, there are also 17 online flights for this tournament on partypoker.net, allowing for players to qualify from the comfort of their own homes.

Live Day 1A is nearly completed as only a few eliminations separate the surviving players from bagging onto Day 2 – there were a total of 56 players registered for the flight.

Play for all the live starting flights will continue until only 10% (rounded up) of the field remains. Once all the flights are completed, the tournament will move onto Day 2, where all online and live qualifiers will be reunited under one room to continue their journey towards crowning the Grand Prix Canada champion.

Late registration will remain open until the start of level 7, allowing players until 9:15pm to jump into the flight. The tournament allows for next-flight re-entries, and players can therefore play multiple Day 1s to try and qualify a stack onto Day 2.

Good luck to all the participating players!

See you on the felts!
