Miguel Goncalo claims the WPT500 trophy

    2018/10/30 | 22:32 by Playground Poker

The first event of the WPT Montreal 2018 is now in the books, and Miguel Goncalo has claimed the title of WPT500 champion after 3 full days of poker.

Through 10 total starting flights, including 3 online on partypoker, there were a total of 2,536 entries, forming a massive $1,229,960 prize pool. 513 players found a bag for Day 2, of which the top 323 secured a cash prize. Once the dust settled, there were only 35 players remaining coming back for Day 3.

Trevor Argue had a strong start to his Day 3, and when the field was nearing the final table he managed to double-up his second biggest stack through the chip leader at the time, Vasilios Gerontakos, to take a massive lead on the field. He carried his lead onto the final table, however after a few unfortunate hands he found himself eliminated in 5th place.

Following Trevor’s elimination was the fall of Thomas Hall, who saw his pocket-Aces get cracked by pocket-Nines, and then his flopped nut straight get outdrawn by top-two pairs.

With Thomas out in 4th place, the 3 finalists decided to strike a deal, leaving the required $40,000 for the eventual winner. William Blais was eliminated shortly after the deal in 3rd place, leaving heads-up play between Said El-Yousfi and Miguel Goncalo.

Said began with a 2-to-1 chip advantage over Miguel, however in less than a level Miguel was able to flip the stacks. Miguel continued to chip away at his opponent, until Said flopped a set and doubled-up back to average stack. Heads-up play continued for a few levels, with each player taking the lead at multiple occasions, until Miguel finally delivered the final blow.

Said limped in for 1,250,000, and then called when Miguel raised to 4,250,000. Both players checked the 8 of Spades 9 of Diamonds Queen of Spades flop, and Miguel fired 4,000,000 on the 8 of Clubs turn. Said made the call, and a Jack of Diamonds was dealt on the river. Miguel checked, and Said bet 9,500,000. Miguel paused for a moment and then went all-in, finding a quick call. He tabled Queen of Clubs 8 of Diamonds for a full-house, besting Said’s straight with King of Clubs 10 of Hearts. With that pot, he became our WPT500 tournament champion!

    Congratulations!

The WPT500 is into heads-up play as William Blais was just eliminated from the field in 3rd place.

Said El-Yousfi and Miguel Goncalo are currently duelling for the title, which is accompanied by a sweet Champion’s Trophy, as well as a hefty cash payout. Although a portion of the prize pool has already been locked in after a 3-way deal, with Said securing $136,030 and Miguel $133,030, they are currently playing for an additional $40,000 payout.

Said started the heads-up battle with roughly a 2-to-1 chip lead, however with the average stack so deep, it’s still anyone’s game.

Congratulations on making it this far!

A few hands after the final 3 players in the WPT500 made a deal, Said opened to 1,400,000 from the button and was put to a decision when William Blais 3-bet all-in from the big blind. After a moment in the tank, Said committed the chips and hands were opened.

Said: Jack of Diamonds 9 of Hearts
William: Ace of Diamonds Jack of Spades

Board: 10 of Spades 7 of Hearts Queen of Hearts Jack of Hearts 3 of Hearts

Said caught a runner-runner flush on the board to eliminated William from play, leaving him heads-up against Miguel Goncalo for the WPT500 title. William had locked in $120,000 in the deal.

When play reached 3-way, the finalists decided to take a break and potentially workout a deal. After a few minutes of back-and-forth, the players finally came to an agreement. The tournament requires that at least $40,000 be left up top for the eventual winner, and the rest of the prize pool was divided as per the table below.

Action has now resumed as we play down to our tournament champion.

Thomas Hall bumped up the action to 1,050,000 from under the gun, and play folded around to Miguel Goncalo, who completed the bet from the big blind.

The dealer rung out a 10 of Hearts Queen of Spades Jack of Hearts flop, and Miguel checked first to act. Thomas tossed out a bet of 900,000, and before the chips even hit the felt Miguel threw in a raise to 3,500,000. Thomas went into the tank for a minute, then looked up at the dealer to announced his all-in for 10,400,000, which was followed by a quick call from Miguel.

Thomas had flopped the nut straight with Ace of Diamonds King of Hearts, while Miguel tabled top-two with Queen of Diamonds Jack of Clubs. The turn brought another Queen of Clubs, sealing the deal for Miguel, who lead out a loud cheer. The river 9 of Spades was dealt as a formality as Thomas congratulated his table-mates, earning himself a $67,000 consolation prize for his deep run.

Play is now 3-handed, with the following chip counts:

William Blais delivered a crippling blow to Trevor Argue, as the two clashed pre-flop each holding a pocket pair. Trevor was the first to put his chips in play, open-shoved from the cutoff with nearly 10,000,000. William Blais called with his remaining 8,400,000 from the button, and the blinds got out of the way.

Trevor: 6 of Diamonds 6 of Clubs
William: 9 of Diamonds 9 of Spades

Board: King of Hearts 5 of Hearts 8 of Hearts Jack of Diamonds 2 of Hearts

Trevor was left quite short-stacked after the hand. With a good percentage of his stack committed in the big blind 2 hands later, he was compelled to call the rest off after Thomas Hall put him to the test from the small blind.

Trevor: 7 of Clubs 4 of Spades
Thomas: 8 of Diamonds 5 of Clubs

Both players caught a piece of the flop, with Thomas’ hand ending up as the winner on the 5 of Diamonds 4 of Hearts 6 of Clubs Queen of Diamonds Ace of Hearts board.

    5th place: Trevor Argue – $51,000
