Event 1 Champion: Steve Pouliot!

The first event of the Playground Poker Spring Classic 2014 has just crowned a champion! Steve Pouliot, who had a big lead on the field for most of the second half of Day 3, has managed to eliminate Daniel Charette in 2nd place and take home the victory, the $32,184 cash prize, and the Playground Poker Spring Classic champion’s bracelet!

After Daniel had made a comeback heads-up by doubling up twice to nearly even the stacks, he found himself all-in preflop yet again with the better hand. However this time his Queen of Diamonds Queen of Spades couldn’t hold up against Steve’s 4 of Hearts 4 of Clubs, as the fours made a runner-runner straight on a 6 of Diamonds 6 of Clubs 5 of Clubs 2 of Hearts 3 of Clubs board.

Daniel still walked away with a nice $28,684 prize, as the players had made an agreement to split the money evenly, leaving an extra $3,500 and the bracelet to the eventual winner (which was one of the terms of this event).

Congratulations Steve Pouliot!

Final Hand of Event 1

3rd Place: Raffi Garabetian

  • Level: 35
  • Small Blind: 150K
  • Big Blind: 300K
  • Ante: 50K
  • Chip Average: 14.9M
  • Remaining: 2
  • Entries: 1492

  • With the 1492 player field down to just 3 remaining, Raffi Garabetian moved all-in from the button preflop for just over 4.8M, and was called by Steve Pouliot from the big blind.

Raffi: Ace of Clubs 7 of Clubs
Steve: Jack of Clubs Jack of Spades

The board ran out 8 of Hearts 5 of Spades 3 of Spades 9 of Spades 10 of Hearts, and Steve added a few more millions to his chip lead stack, while Raffi walked over to the cash to collect his $16,860 reward.

Play is now heads-up in this opening event, with Steve Pouliot holding around 25M out of the 30M in play. But his opponent is Daniel Charette, seems to have an infinite amount of lives!

    3rd place: Raffi Garabetian, $16,860

  • Chip Average: 9.9M
  • Remaining: 3

  • Play had slowed down considerably while Steve Pouliot was playing with a huge chip advantage and the other 3 had relatively small stacks. After several orbits in which nothing notable happened, suddenly Tony Stratopoulos open shoved and Steve snap called.

Tony: King of Hearts 9 of Clubs
Steve: Ace of Diamonds Ace of Clubs

The board gave no help to Tony and he was eliminated in 4th place.

    4th place: Tony Stratopoulos, $12,405

    • Seat 4. Tony Stratopoulos – 2.8M

    5th Place: Shawn Martell

  • Small Blind: 100K
  • Big Blind: 200K
  • Ante: 25K
  • Chip Average: 7.5M
  • Remaining: 4
  • Entries: 1492

  • Steve Pouliot has been on a huge run in the last two levels, picking up one pot after another, usually uncontested. This time he was just at the right place at the right time, when Shawn Martell open-shoved his 4.6M chips stack from middle-position, and Steve quickly called from the button.

Shawn: 5 of Hearts 5 of Spades
Steve: King of Diamonds King of Spades

Shawn was drawing dead by the turn, with the board showing 10 of Spades King of Hearts Queen of Hearts 4 of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds, but will go home with a nice $9,140 payday.

Players will go on break in 3 minutes, and we will provide an update on the chip counts at that point.

    5th place: Shawn Martell, $9,140

Big double up for Steve Pouliot

  • Level: 33
  • Small Blind: 100K
  • Big Blind: 200K
  • Ante: 25K
  • Chip Average: 6M
  • Remaining: 5
  • Entries: 1492

  • Shawn Martell placed a raise preflop to 475K, and Steve Pouliot made the call from the button. The blinds folded and they were heads-up to the flop, which showed 4 of Diamonds 3 of Spades 7 of Diamonds. Shawn, first to act, announced he was all-in, and before his sentence was over, Steve had already called and tabled King of Hearts King of Spades. Shawn and his 10 of Spades 10 of Clubs needed some help, but the turn King of Clubs sealed the deal for Steve. The meaningless river was a 7 of Hearts. Steve is now holding roughly 7M.

    6th place: Kevin Blais

  • Level: 32
  • Small Blind: 75K
  • Big Blind: 150K
  • Ante: 25K
  • Chip Average: 6M
  • Remaining: 5
  • Entries: 1492

  • Kevin Blais has been eliminated in 6th place on a slightly weird hand. He shoved his small stack of just over 1M chips from the UTG position and the dealer announced the all-in. It folded around to Shawn Martell in the small blind, who threw in two chips without saying a word, which is (of course) a call of the all-in bet. That being said, it was pretty clear from his surprised look that he only meant to call the Big Blind.

There was no controversy, however, as there was no question that it was a call of the all-in by Kevin whether or not it was Shawn’s intention, and he didn’t protest in any way.

As it turned out, Shawn’s Ace of Hearts 9 of Diamonds was good against Kevin’s Jack of Clubs Jack of Spades on a flop of Queen of Hearts Ace of Diamonds 7 of Diamonds. The turn brought the 7 of Spades and the river cemented the result – Ace of Spades.

    6th place: Kevin Blais, $6,740

    Daniel Charette doubles twice

Daniel Charette is continuing his improbable run, as he just doubled up twice in the last few hands.

In both hands, Steve open-shoved from the small blind preflop. The first time around, Daniel’s Jack of Hearts 10 of Diamonds won against Steve’s 5 of Clubs 6 of Diamonds on a 8 of Clubs 3 of Spades 10 of Clubs 8 of Hearts 2 of Spades board. The second time around, it was Daniel’s Ace of Hearts Queen of Diamonds that prevailed over Steve’s Queen of Hearts Jack of Spades on a 7 of Spades Ace of Diamonds 5 of Clubs 4 of Spades Jack of Clubs board.

After the second double up, Daniel was holding 12.6M in chips, while Steve had 17.3M. They decided to strike a deal at that point, taking $28,684 each, and leaving an  extra $3,500 as well as the Playground Poker Spring Classic bracelet.

    Good luck!

    7th place: Derek Boucher

  • Level: 32
  • Small Blind: 75K
  • Big Blind: 150K
  • Ante: 25K
  • Chip Average: 5M
  • Remaining: 6
  • Entries: 1492

  • Derek Boucher has been eliminated in a hand that also managed to cripple Daniel Charette, all to the benefit of Tony Stratopoulos.

Derek open shoved his almost 1.2M stack and Daniel flat called. Tony 3-bet shoved his 2.3M stack and the decision came back to Daniel, who called.

Derek: 8 of Hearts 8 of Diamonds
Daniel: 4 of Spades 4 of Diamonds
Tony: Ace of Spades King of Clubs

The flop left little wiggle room for either of the players holding small pocket pairs as it ran out Queen of Clubs King of Diamonds King of Hearts and the pair of 7s (7 of Hearts 7 of Spades) on the turn and river was no help.

    7th place: Derek Boucher, $4,960
