Event 4 Champion: Michael Malm

WSOP bracelet winner Michael Malm has just added another notch to his belt, as he managed to overcome a field of 221 players to emerge a winner in Event 4 – $500 + $50 No Limit hold’em! This was his second final table in as many events in this Playground Poker Spring Classic, as he placed 9th in Event 1.

The heads-up battle was short, as when Michael eliminated Justin Leeson in third place, he took control of most of the chips in play. With a 5 to 1 advantage over his heads-up opponent Jason Griffith, Michael found himself calling an all-in from the big blind a few hands into the match.

Michael: Ace of Clubs Queen of Clubs

Jason: 6 of Clubs 6 of Hearts

The board showed Queen of Diamonds 2 of Spades 5 of Hearts 3 of Diamonds Jack of Clubs, giving Michael top pair for the win, who took home a total of $20,075 and a Playground Poker Spring Classic bracelet.

Congratulations Michael Malm!

  • The pace and style of play changed considerably once the deal had been made, and in the hand that saw Justin Leeson’s elimination, Justin limped, Jason Griffith in the Small Blind called, and Michael Malm in the Big Blind opted to check.

The flop came 6 of Diamonds 2 of Diamonds 10 of Hearts and the players checked it around. The turn was the 8 of Hearts. This time Michael responded to the two early position checks by leading out to 150K. Justin immediately shoved over the top for his whole stack. Michael took a couple of seconds to verify that Justin’s stack was the size he had thought… and called.

Michael: 10 of Spades 5 of Hearts
Justin: Queen of Hearts 9 of Hearts

Justin had quite a few outs to make his flush and beat Michael’s top pair, but only one card to come, which turned out to be the 8 of Diamonds.

    3rd place: Justin Leeson, $16,480

  • In the first hand following the deal, we saw Michael David Yeomans and Justin Leeson get all their chips in the middle on a board that read: 10 of Hearts 9 of Spades 5 of Clubs.

Michael: King of Spades 9 of Clubs

Justin: King of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds

The turn Queen of Clubs and river 7 of Hearts brought no help to Michael, and his deep run in this event came to an end.

4th place: Michael David Yeomans, $13,250

A deal has been made in Event 4

The remaining 4 players have decided to make a chip-chop deal. The guidelines of this tournament require that in case of a deal, at least $2,700 must be left aside for the eventual winner, who will also be taking home a Playground Poker Spring Classic bracelet.

Here is what each player has guaranteed themselves:

    • Michael Malm – $17,375
    • Justin Leeson – $16,480
    • Jason Griffith – $15,355
    • Michael David Yeomans – $13,250

    5th place: Larry Farr

  • Big Blind: 50K
  • Ante: 5K
  • Chip Average: 1.4M
  • Remaining: 4

  • Larry Farr had managed to grind his stack up to over 700K before 3-betting all-in from the big blind on Michael Malm’s button-raise. Michael, who was holding Jack of Spades Jack of Hearts, made the call, and was far ahead of Larry’s 9 of Clubs 9 of Spades.

The flop was very good to Michael, as the window card gave him a set, and he managed to fade the straight draw that Larry picked up on the turn to take the pot on a 7 of Diamonds 2 of Spades Jack of Diamonds 8 of Spades 7 of Hearts board. He now sits on nearly 2 million in chips for the chip lead.

    5th place: Larry Farr, $7,470

  • Big Blind: 50K

  • We just saw Trieu Dung Hong get eliminated in 6th place here on this final table of Event 4, as he moved his remaining 255K into the middle from UTG, and was called by Jason Griffith next to act.

Trieu Dung: Ace of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds

Jason: 9 of Hearts 9 of Diamonds

The board gave Trieu Dung all kinds of possibilities, showing King of Clubs Queen of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds King of Spades 8 of Spades, but Jason’s 9s managed to hold against the draws, sending him over the 1.1M mark in chips.

6th place: Trieu Dung Hong, $5,580

  • Larry Farr has just won his third all-in on this final table as he slowly climbs the leaderboard. This time it was Michael David Yeomans who open-shoved from the small blind, and was called by Larry from the big blind.

Michael: Queen of Clubs 10 of Hearts

Larry: 7 of Hearts 7 of Clubs

Board: Ace of Hearts Ace of Diamonds 2 of Clubs 6 of Spades 4 of Spades

Larry had 360K to start the hand, so he is now sitting with a little more than twice that amount.

    Larry Farr proves his patience

  • Level: 26
  • Small Blind: 20K
  • Big Blind: 40K
  • Ante: 5K
  • Chip Average: 920.8K
  • Remaining: 6

  • Larry Farr has been very quiet on this final table, folding most of his hands preflop. In fact, we’ve only really seen him play in two pots, but both of them ended up going his way.

He began the day with roughly 250K, and got blinded down to 120K in the first 2 levels before finally getting it in from UTG at the end of level 25. He was called by Michael Malm in the small blind, and then Michael David Yeomans moved all-in for over a million from the big blind. Michael Malm regrettably folded his hands, and Larry was heads-up with Michael Yeomans.

Michael David Yeomans: 8 of Diamonds 8 of Hearts

Larry Farr: Ace of Clubs 10 of Clubs

The board of 6 of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds 2 of Spades Queen of Clubs 7 of Clubs gave Larry the win, who tripled up to over 360K.

A few more orbits went by and Larry went back to folded the majority of his hands, that is until he picked up a monster in the big blind. Jason Griffith opened the pot from the cut-off to 90K, and called Larry’s all-in from the big blind for 225K.

Larry: Queen of Clubs Queen of Diamonds

Jason: King of Spades Jack of Spades

The queens held on the board of 9 of Hearts 4 of Hearts 6 of Clubs 4 of Spades Ace of Hearts, and Larry’s patience brought his stack up to a high of over 450K.

    7th place: Daniel Smouha

  • Level: 26
  • Small Blind: 20K
  • Big Blind: 40K
  • Ante: 5K
  • Chip Average: 920.8K
  • Remaining: 6
  • Entries: 221

  • Daniel Smouha has been eliminated by Jason Griffith in 7th place, taking home a prize of $4,165.00.

The fateful hand occurred after a few hands in a row of blind on blind action in which the Small Blind open shoved and provoked folds from the Big Blind. In this case Daniel opened all-in for about 475K from the Button and Jason quickly called. The Big Blind elected to fold.

Daniel: King of Diamonds Jack of Hearts
Jason: Ace of Diamonds King of Hearts

Daniel was facing a stiff uphill battle, and the board of 6 of Clubs 5 of Hearts 5 of Spades 4 of Diamonds 6 of Spades offered no relief.
