    March Power Weekend News

    Event #6 champion: Jean-Francois M

    2018/03/27 - 4:21 by Shawn McCrory

Event #6 capped off the March Power Weekend with yet another big turnout. The final tournament of the series, the $200 + $30 + $100 NL Hold’em 6-Max Bounty, brought out 131 players, enough to easily surpass the $30,000.00 guarantee.

The early levels played out like many bounty tournaments: the action was loose and aggressive as players tried their best to capture as many $100 bounty chips as possible. Following the first break, the tournament took on a different character altogether – the deep stacks and huge prize pool encouraged players to control the size of the pots in their efforts to make a deep run into the money. This trend continued all the way to the money bubble when play slowed down dramatically.

The hand-for-hand play on the bubble lasted for nearly an hour as the short stacks in the field were doubled up when facing elimination on four separate occasions. The long bubble seemed to exhaust the players’ patience because immediately after it burst there was a quick succession of bust outs that brought about the final table faster than anyone expected.

Upon reaching the final table, the players agreed to an ICM chop of the prize pool that secured everyone a healthy profit for the evening. From there, the action went crazy as players moved all-in, blind in some cases, happy to flip for the remaining $500.

The dynamics changed once again when all but two players, Jean-Francois M and Cedric Quenneville, had been eliminated. The two finalists changed gears and played a brief heads-up match until two strong hands clashed and a winner was ultimately decided.

The Playground 200 Champion: Grant Ellis

    2018/03/27 - 2:51 by Jôle Simard

After five days of intense poker action, the Playground 200 came to a close. The tournament was the showcase event of the March Power Weekend, and was a tremendous success. The $100,000 guarantee promised 500 entries, but after the online Day 1 and all 3 live day 1s were completed, a total of 750 entries had taken place, building a prize pool of almost 50% over the expectation.

Day 2 started at 12:00pm on Sunday with 157 players at the tables. 94 of them were to get paid, and after ten 40-minute levels, 23 players were bagging their chips onto tonight’s Day 3.

The evening started with Joël Giguère in the lead. Giguère did not see many good hands, and although his stack was slowly growing, the average was catching up to him. He lost his lead pretty early when Dan Edery enjoyed a sudden boost. Edery kept the lead for a while, until Karl Sahyouni took it on the final table from him with a set of aces.

This was the first of a series of blows that caused the fall of Dan Edery. Joël Giguère was opposed to deal-making, and when he was eliminated in 5th place, the last 4 quickly started talking. They came to an agreement and adjusted the remaining payouts, and when Alex Barbosa left in 4th, the last 3 chopped the pool evenly, keeping 3K aside for the winner.

After that, play loosened up considerably, displaying all kinds of wild action, including playing blind, and looking at only one card. This state of things got Makan Salimi to punt quite a bit of chips, and he went out in 3rd, good for $16,160.

Salimi was the one who introduced the blind action to the table, but his legacy survived him. Grant Ellis and Karl Sahyouni, happy with their secured amount, were willing to roll the dice for the extra money, and they did. In the end, Ellis got all the chips, and took the extra pay.

    Congratulations to all!

Our Playground 200 Champion: Grant Ellis – $19,160.00

    The Seven Survivors

    2018/03/26 - 19:20 by

After just over 6 hours of play, and with a hint of contention as players asked for – and others refused – deals at the final table, the 7 survivors have emerged in the March edition of the Playground Power Weekend’s Event #5. The tournament was a $70 + $10 NL Hold’em Survivor event that attracted 62 players and generated a prize pool of $4,210.00. This meant that everyone took home $601 for the efforts on the day.

Here are your final 7 survivors.

    Event #4 champion: Robert Ouellette

    2018/03/26 - 5:45 by Shawn McCrory

Tonight’s edition of the 50/50 Bounty, Event #4 of the March Power Weekend, lived up to its billing and was a huge success. This tournament brought out 195 runners, building a prize pool that easily surpassed the $20,000 guarantee.

Tonight’s action went through two distinct phases; the first can be simply described as bounty hunting. In the early levels, the players were taking every opportunity to chase down their opponents and the all-ins provided more incentive to call than to fold, regardless of the hole cards involved. The second phase offered a stark contrast; it was all about laddering up. With 25 places paid, there was a huge gap between top and bottom of the prize list so throughout the final three tables the players tightened up and held on to every chip dearly in their efforts to get close to the big money.

Tonight’s champion, Robert Ouellette, went on a magical run this evening. His timing was exceptional, allowing him to get maximum value and multiple bounty chips on numerous occasions, giving him the chip lead most of the evening. After the final 6 players agreed to an ICM chop at the final table, Ouellette took the largest share of the prize pool and he soon found himself heads-up against Michael Fitzpatrick. They had a back-and-forth heads-up battle, but it didn’t take long for Ouellette to finally dispatch his last opponent.

Ouellette’s own words foreshadowed the end result: “It’s my night!”

    Event #4 Champion: Robert Ouellette – $3,900
