MILLIONS Step 2 Satellite – already 40 entries

    2018/03/24 - 18:40 by

Tonight’s Step 2 Satellite is about 20 minutes away from starting, and there are already 40 entries set to begin play as the clock begins in level 1 of the tourney. A significant proportion of these are Step 1 qualifiers, and when you add up that value PLUS the 3 seats that will be added to the prize pool tonight, it’s almost unbeatable. With a total of 7 seats – and counting – to be awarded tonight, that means that almost one out of every five players that starts tonight (17.5%, to be precise) will win a $5,300 seat in the MILLIONS Main Event in April!

Action gets underway soon in the Tournament Hall, and tonight will prove to be a decisive next step along the way to securing some of the $10,000,000 in guaranteed prizes in the MILLIONS Main Event! Come on out to Playground and take your shot!

March Power Weekend Event #3 champion: Alexandre Renaud

    2018/03/23 - 20:53 by Shawn McCrory

Event #3 of the March Power Weekend, the Deepstack Turbo, was a great success that drew a large and diverse field. The Deepstack Turbo featured a $5,000.00 guarantee, but it was easily surpassed as 91 players made their way into the high-paced fray. The robust turnout generated a prize pool of nearly $8,000.00 to be divided between the top 12 finishers.

The story of this event falls into two main themes: the pace of play and the deals.

As a turbo tournament, the 15-minute blind levels make it more of a sprint than a marathon. And the play on display showed that the runners were racing to stay out ahead of the blinds. Particularly in the early levels, it seemed like most hands wound up with one or more players going all-in before the river for either maximum value or to steal as many chips as possible.

Deal-making is a common feature of tournament poker, but today’s event might have set a Playground record. When the field was down to 14 players-two off the money bubble-the players were about to leave on a break when Alexandre Renaud floated the notion of a multi-way deal. He proposed that everyone take a reasonable profit and that they leave a few thousand for the first and second place finishers. To the surprise of many, the players managed to find consensus and a deal was struck as play resumed. The final fourteen players agreed to take $400.00 each and leave significant prizes for first and second place. While it is surprising enough for that many players to reach a deal, what was more surprising that it was not the last deal of the day. When the field was down to four players, they agreed to take money off the first two places so that the third and fourth place finishers could take home a little more. The third deal of the day was concluded when three players remained; more money was taken off the first and second place prizes to give the third place finisher an extra $100.00.

In the end, Renaud’s deal-brokering ability nearly over-shadowed his poker skills. But emerging victorious in this event showed everyone that he knows how to play hold’em even better than he knows how to craft a deal. Congratulations!

    2018/03/22 - 21:21 by Jôle Simard

Our first of 3 Step 1s this weekend is almost 4 levels in, and 16 players are participating. This number is barely enough to cover 3 Step 2 seats, let alone 5!

Step 1s are a great place to start your journey to the $10,000,000 guaranteed MILLIONS Main Event. There is a scheduled Step 2 with a Mega Overlay – 3 seats added to the prize pool – this Saturday at 7:00pm, but more will be held in the next few weeks. Please visit our monthly calendar – April is coming shortly – for all the dates of all satellites leading up to the MILLIONS!

March Power Weekend Event #1 champion: Jean-Philippe Lehoux

    2018/03/22 - 20:07 by Shawn McCrory

Jean-Philippe Lehoux has just been crowned champion of the first event of the March Power Weekend, the $70 + $10 Mix Max.

Lehoux bested a field of 71 players, in an event that brought the players through a range of formats; the day began 10-handed before quickly moving to 8-handed play. Once the field had been reduced to less than 60, the tables were re-adjusted and play continued 6-handed. The tables were adjusted once again when the field stood at 24 players as they played 4-handed. The 4-handed format soon gave way to a 5-handed final table where the five finalists agreed to an ICM chop of the remaining prize pool.

The turning point in Lehoux’s tournament occurred during 4-handed play. In a heads-up pot, Lehoux tried to take his opponent off his hand on the flop by moving all-in with two over cards and an open-ended straight draw. His opponent had flopped top two pair and quickly made the call. Fortunately for Lehoux, the straight draw came in on the turn and he managed to avoid his opponent’s full-house re-draw to take down a huge pot that gave him the chip lead at the time. Lehoux was then able to maintain a healthy stack all the way to the final table where the ICM chop gave him $914.00, the lion’s share of the remaining prize pool. Lehoux also pocketed an extra $200.00 for outlasting his opponents at the final table.

    Congratulations!
