Meet Event #8 champion Sam Pouliot

    2019/02/26 - 5:27 by

Just as heads up action was about to start, Arthur W. said, “This won’t take long.” It was not a lie, because after only a couple of hands, the final hand came up.

Before the hand Sam said, “I think I will call blind” and added 15,000 to his small blind. Both players received their hands. True to his word, Sam never looked at his hand and waited for Arthur to act. Arthur checked and the flop came out: Queen of Diamonds Ace of Diamonds 7 of Spades. Arthur checked and Sam, still playing blind, casually threw in a bet of 50,000 which Arthur called.

When the 6 of Hearts came out on the turn, Arthur checked again. Sam decided to finally check out his hand and shoved all-in as soon as he saw it. Arthur did not hesitate to call. Both men tabled their hands. Sam had hit top pair holding Ace of Spades 8 of Diamonds whereas Arthur had hit middle pair with Queen of Clubs 9 of Diamonds. Arthur laughed and said, “You wake up with an ace playing blind? Figures!”. Obviously Arthur was making a reference to Samuel’s amazing run on the final table. The 10 of Diamonds on the river changed nothing, and Samuel’s pair of aces was enough to clinch the win.

Samuel: Ace of Spades 8 of Diamonds
Arthur: Queen of Clubs 9 of Diamonds
Board: Queen of Diamonds Ace of Diamonds 7 of Spades 6 of Hearts 10 of Diamonds

Samuel Pouliot is crowned champion of Event #8 6-Max Bounty tournament.

Event #8 Champion: Samuel Pouliot, $4,424

Dylan Thibault was patiently waiting his turn to try and get some action going. Dylan decided to try his luck with Ace of Clubs 10 of Hearts. His all-in was quite sizeable and everyone folded, except Sam Pouliot. There was no denying that Sam was on a roll. Sam nevertheless requested a precise count from the dealer. Dylan’s all-in added up to 612,000 chips; no laughing matter.

Sam was still rearranging his chips from his previous winning hand, but he started counting it all. Obviously doing the math over in his head, he suddenly looked up and said, “Ok, I’ll gamble.” and tabled his hand: 10 of Diamonds Queen of Hearts, completely dominated by Dylan’s higher ten.

The flop was not great for Dylan, but not exactly too bad either: 8 of Hearts Jack of Hearts Queen of Clubs. The flop had given Sam middle pair and Dylan a gut-shot straight draw, but the flush draw was Sam’s. The 4 of Spades on the turn eliminated any possible flush for either gentlemen. Now only an ace or a king could save Dylan, but the river card was anything but: 2 of Clubs. Sam’s gamble paid off, one pair of Queens was enough, and Thibault was sent home in 3rd place.

    3rd place: Dylan Thibault, $2,510

Now Sam Pouliot and Arthur W get ready for heads up action, and Pouliot has a massive lead.

The puck stops here for Michael Khan

With the blinds ever increasing, the options for the lower stacks were pretty limited. Taking into consideration that chip leader Sam Pouliot had almost 50% of the chips, it was hard for anyone to do anything else but go all-in if they woke up with a half decent hand.

That is exactly what happened to Michael Khan who was dealt pocket 2 of Hearts 2 of Spades. No sooner had he looked at his cards that he pushed all-in. Arthur W. got out of the way, which left Sam to act. Sam immediately called the 546,000 bet with Ace of Spades Queen of Spades.

Michael wasn’t in too bad a shape on the flop: 10 of Diamonds King of Hearts 10 of Hearts but the Queen of Hearts on the turn almost crushed his hopes. The river brought no miracle to Michael 3 of Diamonds and two pairs for Sam was enough to terminate Michael Khan’s trek tonight, in 4th place.

    4th place: Michael Khan, $1,880

Arvanitis sent to the rail in 5th place

Sam Pouliot, who seemed to be involved in a lot of hands in the last leg of this tournament, made short work of eliminating Chris Arvanitis.

Four of the five players limped into the pot. The flop came out: 8 of Spades 6 of Spades 6 of Clubs and Chris shoved all-in, having hit top pair with King of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds. The only call came from Sam Pouliot, who called the 500K + bet with lightning speed and tabled King of Hearts 6 of Diamonds; he had hit big on the flop. Chris let out a deep sigh, and started getting up, as the last two community cards were revealed: Ace of Clubs, 3 of Diamonds . No help there. Pouliot’s trip sixes was enough to put an end to Chris’s tournament in 5th place.

All in all Chris said he was glad to have come back from an earlier hand, in which a mistake made by a fellow player had lead to the massive reduction of his stack.

This hand clearly established Pouliot as mega chip leader, with over 1.5 million in chips.

    5th place: Chris Arvanitis, $1,410

Enjoying what seemed to be like a very relaxing table-side massage, Joshua took a quick peek at his hand 10 of Diamonds 10 of Hearts and pushed all his loot forward; approximately 250K. Arthur W., the only other player in the hand, opened his hand and threw in a bounty chip simultaneously, indicating a clear call with Ace of Hearts King of Diamonds.

The board was revealed swiftly: Jack of Clubs Ace of Spades 4 of Hearts 7 of Hearts 4 of Clubs and it spelled the end for the young man. Arthur’s Big Slick hit a pair and sent Joshua Caballero home in 6th place.

    6th place: Joshua Caballero, $1,060

The hand that hurt Vsevolod Malamud was not his last hand, it was the previous one. Vsevolod lost the majority of his stack after calling an all-in from Arthur W. That fateful hand left him with 8,000 chips.

With blinds 8K/16K, Vsevolod was automatically all-in in the next hand, since he was small blind. Michael Khan wasted no time raising to 41,000. The bet was called by Arthur W. and big blind Dylan Thibault. The flop came King of Hearts 5 of Hearts Jack of Clubs and everyone checked. When the 6 of Spades came on the turn, Dylan checked and Michael Khan bet 70,000. Arthur W. snap-called and Dylan folded. This left only Arthur and Michael in the side pot. Michael shoved all-in on the river Ace of Spades. Arthur insta-called and tabled his hand: Ace of Diamonds 6 of Hearts. Arthur had snagged runner-runner two pairs. Michael showed his loosing hand: 10 of Hearts 10 of Clubs and paid Arthur’s all-in. So Vsevolod Malamud hits the rail in 7th position.

    7th place: Vsevolod Malamud, $790
