And finally… Day 1d!

Although the $135 + $15 No Limit Hold’em Re-entry format is the usual – and very popular – way that we kick off major tournament series’ at Playground, this is the first time we have run the event with four Day 1s.

So far the event has been a hit – and we surpassed the guarantee last night – so the extra Day 1 being played tonight will do two things: a) give players an additional chance to qualify for Day 2, and b) pump up the prize pool so we’ll be able to pay out more money to more players when the whole affair comes to a conclusion on Monday night.

As the tournament is about to start there are already 272 registrants with a published cap of 350 and late registration open until about 10:10pm tonight.

Good luck to all!

A typical EOD hand…

  • Level: 13
  • Small Blind: 1K
  • Big Blind: 2K
  • Ante: 300
  • Chip Average: 62.9K
  • Remaining: 126
  • Entries: 396

  • Asm Nazmul Huda just doubled through Dany Hamel Boulay in the kind of hand that’s likely being played throughout the tournament at this stage in the day.

Blinds were 800/1600/a200 and the button was on seat 4. Dany Hamel Boulay, a respected local player raised in early position to 3.2K, and Alain Rondeau and Terrence Davis both called. Huda had shoved from the Big Blind on the previous and gotten no resistance – but this time there were already 3 players who had expressed an interest in the pot.

Boulay thought for a few seconds and shoved over the top with his 100K+ stack. Rondeau and Davis both insta-folded and the cards were flipped over. Huda showed Ace of Hearts 7 of Spades while Boulay had 5 of Diamonds 5 of Clubs.

The board ran out 7 of Hearts 7 of Clubs 2 of Hearts to put Huda well in the lead and the turn 10 of Clubs changed nothing. Boulay didn’t connect on the river either, with the 2 of Spades giving Huda the Boat. Huda took 24K from Boulay on the hand plus the Big Blind, the antes, and the initial 3.2K from each of Rondeau and Davis left him with 58K – which will be a an OK, if below average, starting stack on Day 2.

Play has now moved into the last level of Day 1c.

    Some early big stacks

  • Level: 7
  • Small Blind: 250
  • Big Blind: 500
  • Ante: 75
  • Chip Average: 26.6K
  • Remaining: 298
  • Entries: 396

  • It’s still early in the day for anyone to have grown a huge stack, but there are a few players whose chip count is starting to set them apart from the field – at least 5 players are up over 60K and two are inching up on 100K!

Some of the bigger stacks at the moment:

    80K+

    • Kyle Catling
    • Aris L-Dupont

    60K+

    • Randy Khalil
    • Jean-Kristophe Guillette
    • Shawn A Martell

    Back from break

  • Level: 5
  • Small Blind: 150
  • Big Blind: 300
  • Ante: 50
  • Chip Average: 23.3K
  • Remaining: 340
  • Entries: 396

  • The players are back from their first break of the day and action continues in Level 5. They’re playing 13 levels total today, so the action should wind up at around 7:30pm this evening.

The final number of entries in Day 1c after all late registrants were seated is 396, which means that through the first three flights of Event 1 there have been 1,151 total entries.

    Early Day 1c action

  • Level: 4
  • Small Blind: 100
  • Big Blind: 200
  • Ante: 25
  • Chip Average: 22.1K
  • Remaining: 346
  • Entries: 382

  • Not that many people seem to have been put off by the snowstorm (or the bridge closure this weekend) and registration is up over 380 entries with some time left to late register.

Here are some photos of the action today.

Today in the Spring Classic (March 22)

Spring in the Montreal area is defined by two things: increasingly warm, beautiful weather… and the big spring snowstorm that drops a few inches before melting and clearing the way for the real springtime.

Today is the day for the big spring snowstorm in Montreal! On my way to Playground this morning I stopped for coffee and in 20 minutes about 2 inches accumulated on the car. Luckily, it has already subsided quite a bit, and the highways are surprisingly clear and safe to travel. If there’s one civic project we get right in this area, it’s roadway snow clearing!

You’d think this might herald a quiet day for Days 1c and 1d in Event 1, the $135 + $15 No Limit Hold’em Re-entry event that’s on now, but there are already just a shade under 200 players registered today and experience teaches us that this projects out to easily 350 or more runners in today’s daytime flight. We expect a comparable number tonight, which means the prize pool, which has already blown past the guaranteed $100,000, may actually start to edge towards $200,000!

For a tournament with a total $150 buy-in, that adds up to some pretty great prizes for those who manage to qualify for Day 2 on Sunday and then compete for the win on Monday evening.

    Good luck to everyone today!
