Kelly Smith shows no fear

Kelly Smith has definitely been the most active player on table 65, and in the last few orbits we’ve seen her stack go on a virtual roller-coaster ride. She managed to grind her stack up to over 400K before sending around 250K over to Jason Griffith in a hand that made it to the river, but didn’t showdown. She then proceeded to move all-in preflop several times in the next few hands, all of which were uncalled, and picked up some valuable blinds.

Holding a little over 300K, she 3-bet jammed Jerome St-Onge’s preflop open to 40K from early position, and got the call. Her King of Hearts 9 of Hearts and was up against Ace of Hearts Jack of Spades, but the board of 7 of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds King of Clubs Ace of Diamonds 5 of Spades ran in favour of Jerome, who doubled to over 500K, leaving Kelly with only 54K.

The very next hand she was all-in (blind) with 9 of Clubs 4 of Clubs versus Jason’s 3 of Clubs 3 of Spades, and doubled her stack up on a 10 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts 2 of Spades Queen of Hearts 5 of Diamonds board.

A few hands later, she found herself all-in again, this time with Ace of Clubs 6 of Clubs versus the Queen of Spades 4 of Spades of Trieu Dung Hong. She paired her ace on a 4 of Diamonds Ace of Diamonds 8 of Hearts King of Spades Jack of Spades, and climbed up to 295K. A few hands later she 3-bet jammed again over Jerome’s 40K UTG raise, and this time managed to make him fold. She is now nearing the 400K mark again.

  • We just saw a big hand develop between Trieu Dung Hong and Jonathan Theriault that resulted in a pot exceeding 800K. Jonathan raised UTG to 25K, and was called only by Trieu from the big blind. The flop showed King of Clubs 3 of Hearts 6 of Spades, and Trieu check-raised Jonathan’s 40K bet up to 120K. Jonathan then announced he was all-in, which put Trieu into the tank. After a few moments, Trieu announced the call, and both players tabled their hands.

Jonathan: King of Hearts Queen of Clubs

Trieu: Ace of Spades King of Spades

The turn 10 of Diamonds and river 7 of Spades kept Trieu ahead, and he picked up a pot that propelled him into the chip lead. Jonathan was left with around 80K left, but has picked up a few blinds since and is still in contention with roughly 10BB.

    Event 4 – Results & Payouts

Event 4 in the Playground Poker Spring Classic was a $500 + $50 No Limit Hold’em tournament being held over three days from March 25 to 27, 2014. A total of 221 players registered for the event building a prize pool of $107,185.00 which was distributed according to this table.

The payouts in this table reflect a player deal that was made at 4 remaining. The players chose to reserve $2,700 and the bracelet for first and divide the rest of the remaining prize pool by chip chop.

Rank First Name Last Name Prize
1 Michael Malm $20,075.00 and the Spring Classic bracelet
    2 Jason Griffith $15,355.00
    3 Justin Leeson $16,480.00
    4 Michael David Yeomans $13,250.00
    5 Larry Farr $7,470.00
    6 Trieu Dung Hong $5,580.00
    7 Daniel Smouha $4,165.00
    8 Karo Lyne Dufour $3,115.00
    9 Jerome St-Onge $2,335.00
    10 Kelly Smith $1,745.00
    11 David Baba $1,745.00
    12 Mark Fitzpatrick $1,605.00
    13 Faizal Satchu $1,605.00
    14 Jonathan Theriault $1,475.00
    15 Jordan Martin $1,475.00
    16 Jeff Cote $1,370.00
    17 Jeffrey Cormier $1,370.00
    18 Peter Kavouras $1,260.00
    19 Ruben Percival $1,260.00
    20 Alex Fiorani $1,155.00
    21 Benoit Jean $1,155.00
    22 Gary Yeghiayan $1,070.00
    23 Jonathan Neil Hansmeyer $1,070.00

    Eliminations 23 to 19

  • Level: 20
  • Small Blind: 5K
  • Big Blind: 10K
  • Ante: 1K
  • Chip Average: 305.5K
  • Remaining: 18
  • Entries: 221

  • The first few players since the money bubble burst have been eliminated from the tournament.

    19th place: Ruben Percival, $1,260.00
    20th place: Alex Fiorani, $1,155.00
    21st place: Benoit Jean, $1,155.00
    22nd place: Gary Yeghiayan, $1,070.00
23rd place: Jonathan Neil Hansmeyer, $1,070.00

Alex’s elimination was a cooler – after having recently lost a pot to reduce him from his high point of over 350K, Jordan Martin raised preflop to 25K from middle position and Jonathan Theriault called from the button in Seat 9. Alex raised all-in and put his 100K+ stack at risk, only to be called by Jordan. Jonathan folded.

Alex turned over 10 of Spades 10 of Hearts while Jordan held Jack of Diamonds Jack of Hearts. The flop had “a little something” for both of them: Jack of Clubs 8 of Hearts 10 of Diamonds for set over set, and the turn 5 of Clubs and river 3 of Spades didn’t save Alex. Even more “coolerish” about it is that after the hand one of the other players reported folding a Jack, meaning that Jordan’s top set was possible only due to the case Jack on the flop.

  • In the seventh hand of hand-for-hand action, Kyle Hartree open raised all-in to 31K and it folded around to Daniel Smouha who called from the Big Blind. Kyle turned over 9 of Spades 9 of Clubs while Daniel held Jack of Hearts Queen of Spades.

The flop was pretty good for Kyle: 4 of Clubs 6 of Clubs 7 of Diamonds and the Ace of Spades on the turn didn’t hurt either. However the Jack of Diamonds that came on the river gave Daniel a better pair than Kyle, who was eliminated in 24th place.

The rest of the players stand to make a minimum of $1,070 and play continues.

    A pre-bubble hand

  • The bubble is approaching quickly and the players know – and can feel – that the impact of their every action is amplified. Luckily for everyone the pace of play has remained relatively quick – no 5-minute tanking – but big decisions are being made every hand.

A hand just played out between two of the players who have been among the chip leaders the whole way. Mark Fitzpatrick raised to 15K from the cutoff and Jeff Cote re-raised from the big blind to 36K. Mark decided to flat call and we saw a flop.

Flop: King of Diamonds 4 of Spades 5 of Clubs.

Jeff led out for 27K and Mark again called. The turn brought the Ace of Hearts and the players both checked. The river was the Jack of Hearts and Jeff chose to check to Mark, who bet 56K. Jeff thought for about 30 seconds before he made the call.

Mark called out “two pair” and tabled King of Hearts Jack of Clubs and Jeff showed the Ace of Spades and mucked.

Immediately after that hand a player busted on another table and the tournament is now hand-for-hand on the money bubble.
