The High Roller Champion: Samuel Chartier

Heads-up action between Ami Alibay and Samuel Chartier was a relatively short affair, as Sam put in a dominating performance and he seemingly had an answer at every turn for anything Ami tried. By the final hand, the stack size had migrated from roughly 50-50 at the outset of 2-way action to about 80-20 in favour of Sam.

The final hand, when it came, came very quickly. After a standard button raise from Ami, Sam pushed all-in and Ami quickly called.

Sam: Ace of Diamonds Queen of Clubs
Ami: Ace of Clubs 9 of Spades

The flop had a little bit for each of them – and would have had more had one of them held any hearts: Queen of Hearts 8 of Hearts 9 of Hearts. The turn Ace of Spades and river 3 of Diamonds couldn’t give Ami any additional help, however, and he was eliminated in 2nd place.

2nd place: Ami Alibay

Local poker player, nightclub owner, and DJ Ami Alibay has been eliminated in 2nd place in Event 4 of the PokerStars Canada Cup, a $10,000 + $400 No Limit Hold’em High Roller event. Ami played fantastic poker throughout the 3-day event and only fell heads-up after starting Day 3 in dominant fashion.

Congratulations Ami!

  • Ami Alibay and Samuel Chartier are the only two players left in the High Roller event and they have taken a short break before heads up action begins.

Going into heads up play Ami is the chip leader with 529K in chips while Samuel is just a shade behind with 491K in chips. There has been some discussion of a deal but so far no agreement has been reached.

  • David Yan has been eliminated by Ami Alibay in 3rd place.

Action pre-flop was quite tame – David was on the button and made a small standard raise, Samuel folded and Ami called from the big blind. It went check-check on the flop of 2 of Spades 3 of Hearts 5 of Hearts and check-check again on the turn of 4 of Diamonds. The river brought out the Ace of Spades for a straight on board and Ami, who easily covered David, shoved all-in. David didn’t really tank, but quickly (but resigned to the possibility of bad news) put his stack in the middle by way of a call. Ami flipped over Queen of Spades 6 of Clubs for the higher straight and the win.

  • There are just three players left in the High Roller tournament (aka Event 4), and they have unbagged their chips and are just about ready to play out the final stages of the event.

The pay jumps from 3rd to 2nd to 1st place are huge, so there’s still a lot to play for.

Good luck to all three players – Ami, David, and Samuel.

    The end of Day 2…

There are just three players left in the event but the scheduled ending point of 10 levels played today has arrived and the players have decided to call it a night and return tomorrow to play to the end. It has been a gruelling day of poker and everyone is visibly fatigued.

When they return tomorrow they’ll take the same seats and re-start play at 1pm with the following stacks that have been bagged up for storage.

    1. Ami Alibay – 170K
    2. David Yan – 248K
    3. Samuel Chartier – 593K

  • Event 4 is now down to the final 3 players, and here is how the chips are spread out:

    1. Samuel Chartier – 521K
    2. Ami Alibay – 370K
    3. David Yan – 136K

    Level 18 has just begun.

  • The former world champion Jonathan Duhamel was on a good run in this High Roller Event of the Pokerstars Canada Cup, but it just came to an end when he 3bet shoved his 114K stack over Samuel Chartier’s 11K open. Samuel made the quick call, and they were off to the flop:

Samuel: Ace of Spades Queen of Diamonds

Jonathan: 8 of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds

Jonathan couldn’t hit anything on the board of 5 of Clubs 10 of Diamonds 3 of Spades 10 of Hearts Jack of Spades, and was send to the cashiers to pick up his earnings.

    4th place: Jonathan Duhamel, $34,520

  • In a hand that was made for TV, Kevin MacDonald was crippled to 2bb by David Yan. David opened to 10K from the button, and called Kevin’s all-in of just over 100K from the big blind.

Kevin: 2 of Hearts 2 of Diamonds

David: Ace of Hearts 10 of Hearts

The flop was definitely an interesting one, bringing out Ace of Clubs 2 of Spades Ace of Spades. The turn didn’t change much, adding a Queen of Clubs to the board, but the river 10 of Clubs gave David a better full house.

Kevin was left with only 11K behind, and found himself all-in the very next hand with a respectable King of Diamonds 10 of Hearts, but was crushed by Ami Alibay’s Ace of Spades 10 of Clubs on a board of 9 of Clubs King of Hearts Queen of Diamonds 9 of Diamonds Jack of Clubs.

    5th place: Kevin MacDonald, $24,730
