Jour 1a: Décompte de jetons
MVP Standings updated!
With the final results for Event 7 now in, we have updated the Fall Classic MVP Standings.
Check out the updated standings here.
Huge hand
The action was pretty calm all the way down to the river on a
board, but river betting was extremely quick and cost Ricky most of his stack. Ricky (first to act) bet 350K and Benoit insta-shoved his shorter (but still healthy) stack. Ricky didn’t think twice before calling and tabling
for flopped trip 7s… unfortunately for him, Benoit tabled his
for a runner-runner straight to the 7.
Ricky went from chip leader down to just about 1.6M chips, and Benoit is the massive chip leader.
Heads Up!
With the eliminations of Jean-Pierre Hetu and Michael Neuber after a long period of 4-handed play, the tournament has reached the final showdown between two players playing heads up poker.
The two players remaining are Ricky Tang (4M chips) and Benoit Pesant (3.9M chips) and they are playing for $67,335 for 1st place and $47,205 for 2nd place.
Good luck to both of the players remaining!
Back from dinner
The players are back from their dinner break and with last-minute registrations from Faraz Jaka and Daniel Cates, the final tally of players for Day 1a is 215.
FYI there are over 110 players in tonight’s satellite for the WPT as well…
Just flew from SF to Montreal direct from 8am landed at 5pm and str8 to the cardroom w/ my luggage to late register @WPT Main Event. #letsgo

Dinner break!
The players are now on a 45-minute long dinner break. While the players are enjoying a nice buffet there are sure to be a few racing from the airport to try and make the end of late registration, which closes at the end of this break (in 35 minutes).
There are a large number of household names (at least household names in poker-playing houses) in the event but some of the biggest names have already busted from Day 1a. Some of the eliminations so far include: Scott Siever, Antonio Esfandiari, Peter Jetten, Marvin Rettenmaier, and Chris Moorman.
After the break, players will play another 4 levels with one 15-minute break after level 8. To qualify for Day 2, players will be at the tables until just before midnight.
Remember – for players who don’t yet have a ticket for tomorrow, there is a $330 satellite that starts in 50 minutes (8pm).
Second break of Day 1a
Day 1a of the WPT Montreal has reached its second break of the day and during the break we went searching for the chip leaders at this point.
The top three that we found:
- Marco Lang – 90K
- Badri Aboud – 90K
- Sebastien Drolet-Poitras – 80K
Dean Murphy is not among the chip leaders, but he has rebuilt his stack to just under what he started with – at the break he had 28.3K, up from his low of 2.1K when his quads were beaten by a straight flush in level 1.
8th place: Chris Back
Jean-Pierre opened UTG+1 for 50K and Chris went all in with his remaining 54K. Ricky flatted from the button, and Jean-Pierre called the extra 4K. The flop was
. Jean-Pierre led out 5oK which encouraged Ricky to fold. Jean-Pierre turned over
while Chris held
. The turn was
and the
on the river kept Jean-Pierre in the lead and Chris was given his cash coupon for a trip to the cage.
8th place: Chris Back, $8,985
9th place: Tanveer Dhanjal
Tanveer was the chip leader for much of the tournament, but chipped down quite a bit towards the end of Day 2 and couldn’t make a comeback today. Just a few minutes after his neighbour in Seat 10 was eliminated, Tanveer followed him to the cashier to get paid.
Tanveer’s final hand:
Benoit raised to 51K from middle position, and Tanveer reraised to 113K. Benoit responded by shoving and Tanveer called for his tournament life.
The cards – Tanveer:
Benoit:
The board ran out
and Benoit’s Jacks (barely) held on.
9th place: Tanveer Dhanjal, $6,730
First blood
Ricky Tang finally arrived and just a few minutes later eliminated Terence Lai in 10th place.
Ricky open raised to 55K in the hijack. It folded to Terence in the SB who shoved his short stack. The BB folded and Ricky quickly called, showing
. Terence was playing
.
The flop of :
put Terence in the lead but the
on the turn moved Ricky far into the lead and the
on the river spelled the end of Terence’s day.
10th place: Terence Lai, $4,900
