  • On just the second hand played between the 9 players seated (more about that below) we had an all-in and a call.

Michael Neuber made a small opening raise from the hijack and Jean-Pierre Hetu 3-bet from the button to 110K. Michael 4-bet jammed and Jean-Pierre quickly called.

Michael was holding King of Hearts King of Clubs and Jean-Pierre held Ace of Spades King of Spades and Michael’s Kings held up on a board of 7 of Clubs Queen of Spades 6 of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds Jack of Hearts for a full double up.

There’s another element to this final table that is a bit of a mystery at this point. Ricky Tang, a player who has enjoyed a lot of success here at Playground Poker Club in the past and is a regular guest from the Toronto area during big events here has not yet arrived at the club to take his seat. He started the day with the 3rd best chip count at the table, but with blinds at 10K/20K/a3K he can lose a big chunk of his stack relatively quickly. More news on this story as we learn it…

Event 7’s Final Table is set to go

  • Big Blind: 20K

  • Remaining: 10

  • The final table of Event 7 – $1000 + $100 No Limit Hold’em Deepstack is set to go. It was slated to start at 3 but there was a short delay to adjust the cameras that survey the action and ensure that there’s a backup in the case of any controversy.

The final table itself is sitting in the middle of the stage at the far end of the Tournament Hall, and impressive location for what should prove to be an interesting final table.

We’ll be updating the Payout table as players are eliminated from the event and at the end we’ll use the results to update the MVP Standings – this event is sure to have a big impact!

  • Quebec has been producing a disproportionate number of great poker champions in the past few years, and a few of the best are playing today (with more due in Day 1b and Day 1c).

    First break of the day

  • Level: 3
  • Small Blind: 75
  • Big Blind: 150
  • Ante: 25
  • Chip Average: 31.4K
  • Remaining: 175

  • Players are taking their first 15-minute break of the day after two levels of play. There have only been 8 players to bust so far, but unfortunately three well-known Canadian players are among them: Shawn Buchanan from BC, and from Toronto, Michael Wywrot and Nicholas Verkaik.

A story we’re going to follow today involves one of the Playground regs in the event, Dean Murphy, who lost a hand early in level 1 holding quads and surrendered over 90% of his starting stack. It’s amazing enough that he didn’t go broke – but even better for him is that he has managed to rebuild his stack to over 15.5K going into level 3. We’ll follow his progress today to see if he’s able to overcome that beat and at least go deep today – or even qualify for Day 2.

    Registration keeps climbing

  • Big Blind: 150

  • Judging by Twitter and some forums today is a big time “get to Montreal” travel day for players coming to play in the WPT Montreal, so registration keeps on climbing as the day progresses.

There are quite a few Players Club members in the field today…

    And they’re off!

  • Level: 1
  • Small Blind: 50
  • Big Blind: 100
  • Ante: 0
  • Chip Average: 30K
  • Remaining: 158
  • Entries: 158

  • The opening formalities are complete and Day 1a of the 2013 WPT Montreal is on! There are currently 158 players seated but there are still a lot of people making their way to Montreal with the intention of late registering today, which will be possible until the end of the break after level 6.

To be more precise, late reg will be available until the end of 6 hour long levels + 2×15 min breaks + 45 min dinner break – so until about 7:15 this evening. Each Day 1 will play 10 hour-long levels.

Good luck to everyone playing today!

    Half an hour to go…

It’s 11:30am and we’re just 30 minutes away (give or take) from the start of Day 1a of the PartyPoker WPT Montreal and players are arriving, buying their tickets, enjoying a nice breakfast at The Rail, and generally preparing to get started in what should prove to be one of the season’s largest WPT stops.

Surveying Twitter and other social media we find that there are quite a few star players who will be in the field today. Jonathan Roy, last year’s champion, will start today, as will 3rd place finisher Jeff Gross. Some of the other notables expected today: Premier League VII champion Sorel Mizzi, WSOP Main Event Final Tablist Marc-Etienne McLachlan, British online superstar Chris Moorman, and many more.

    We’re just 12 hours away…

The second WPT Montreal is set to begin with Day 1a tomorrow, Friday November 29th at noon!

The buzz around the room at Playground has been steadily increasing all week, and by this afternoon it was almost deafening – at least figuratively speaking. The satellite this afternoon offered a 2-seat guarantee – but 6 were awarded, along with over $3000 for 7th place. And at the same time, there were three single table sit’n go satellites that awarded another 3 seats. That brings the number of satellite seats awarded to well over 100 – not including online satellites.

And that doesn’t include the seats being awarded tonight. There were well over 300 entries in tonight’s satellite, far surpassing the 10 seat guarantee that was in place!

Have fun, welcome to Playground, and good luck in the WPT!
