PartyPoker WPT Montreal Main Event Champion: Derrick Rosenbarger

The PartyPoker WPT Montreal Main Event has come to a close after 5 days of action packed poker, and of the 862 entries that we saw come and go, it was Derrick Rosenbarger that was the last one standing! After coming in to the final table as one of the shorter stacks, Derrick managed to build some momentum progressively throughout the night, and went on to defeat poker pro Mukul Pahuja in a heated heads-up battle to emerge as the champion. His victory earned him a $517,049 prize, as well as a $15,400 seat to the WPT World Championship, a beautiful WPT Montreal Belt, and an eternal spot engraved amongst the past WPT Champions on the WPT Trophy!

On the last hand, Derrick put in a minimum raise from the small blind, and quickly called when Mukul moved in over the top. He showed a pair of Queen of Diamonds Queen of Spades, and was far ahead of Mukul’s Ace of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds. The board was no threat to the pair of queens, showing 9 of Hearts 3 of Clubs 6 of Diamonds 4 of Spades 2 of Hearts, and Derrick gave a fist pump when he realised what had just happened.

Congratulations on your victory Derrick!

Declaring Derrick Rosenbarger as our Champion

2nd place: Mukul Pahuja, $362,430

Mukul Pahuja

The Champion!

After a gruelling spell of heads up play that saw several back-and-forth swings of the chip lead, Derrick Rosenbarger has emerged victorious in the 2013 WPT Montreal! For the victory he takes home $517,049 in cash, a seat in the WPT World Championship later this year, he gets his name on the WPT Cup – and he wins Playground Poker’s WPT Champion’s Belt!

In second place tonight was Mukul Pahuja, who tilted the affair in his direction a few times during the night but couldn’t quite get the job finished, although not because of a lack of effort or poker talent.

Congratulations to both!

Mukul Doubles Back Over 10 Million

  • Big Blind: 250K

  • Derrick placed a min-raised preflop to 500K, and Mukul made the call from the big blind. On the flop of 9 of Clubs 10 of Hearts 2 of Clubs , Mukul check-called Derrick’s bet of 450K, and then check-raised Derrick’s bet of 800K on the 6 of Spades turn. Derrick ended up committing the 4.1M total all-in from Mukul, and turned over a hand that was drawing dead.

Mukul: 7 of Spades 8 of Hearts

Derrick: 10 of Spades 3 of Spades

The river 6 of Hearts didn’t change anything, and Mukul is back up over the 10 million chip mark.

  • Mukul has taken a few pots off Derrick recently to take an almost 2-to-1 lead, but he just lost one that cost him a lot. Mukul 3bet preflop to 975K, and Derrick made the call after having raised originally to 425K. On a flop of 8 of Clubs 8 of Hearts Ace of Spades, Mukul leads out with a small bet of 350K, and calls when Derrick raises to 1.3M. On the turn of Jack of Hearts, Mukul checks it over to Derrick, who bets 2.1M. Mukul then raises all-in, and gets a quick call from Derrick.

Mukul: Queen of Spades 7 of Hearts

Derrick: 8 of Spades 10 of Spades

The river Jack of Spades improves Derricks hand to a full house, but Mukul was already drawing dead on the turn. Derrick climbs to over 20 million with that hand, taking the lead once more in this sea-saw heads-up battle.

Mukul Calls Three Streets to Win a Big Pot

Mukul has just check-called on 3 streets on a board of 7 of Diamonds 5 of Clubs Ace of Diamonds Jack of Spades 4 of Clubs, including a huge river bet, to pick up a huge pot. Derrick bet 375K on the flop, 800K on the turn and 3.2M on the river, holding only Queen of Clubs 10 of Clubs. Mukul tanked on the river, but eventually slid in the chips with Ace of Hearts 3 of Diamonds, and picked up a pot of roughly 9M.

    Derrick Doubles Up

We just saw a 4bet shove from Mukul and a quick call from Derrick on a flop of 2 of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds 2 of Hearts.

Mukul: King of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds

Derrick: Queen of Hearts 6 of Clubs

Mukul had a lot of outs to win the hand, including any diamond, ten or king, but with the turn 8 of Clubs and river 2 of Clubs, it was Derrick that won took the huge pot. He is now the chipleader with almost 20M.

The winner will walk out with $517,049 in cash, a $15,400 seat to the WPT World Championship, and the WPT Montreal Belt! Finishing second isn’t all that bad either, as there’s a $362,430 prize that comes along with.

Good luck to both our finalists!

    The Royal Flush Girls

    3rd Place: Serge Cantin

For the second hand in a row, Mukul Pahuja and Serge Cantin are all-in against each other preflop for a pot the size of over 17M. On the first hand, they showed down Ace of Clubs Queen of Diamonds and Ace of Diamonds Queen of Clubs, and ended up chopping the pot. On the second hand, we saw Mukul open to 350K, Serge 3bet to 1M, Mukul 4bet to 2.65M and finally Serge move all-in. Mukul snapped called, and they were off to the races.

Mukul: Ace of Hearts King of Clubs

Serge: 8 of Diamonds 8 of Spades

The board was 7 of Clubs 6 of Diamonds Ace of Diamonds 3 of Diamonds 10 of Clubs, and Mukul, who had only 250K more than Serge, picked up the huge pot to go into heads-up with a 2-to-1 lead versus Derrick Rosenbarger. Serge will walk out with a hefty $234,051 payday, vastly improving on his final table bubble last year.

Sylvain moved all-in from the button for 1.82M, and was called by Serge Cantin from the small blind. Mukul, sitting in the big blind, gave it a minute before he folded, showing the Ace of Clubs.

Sylvain: Ace of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds

Serge: 8 of Clubs 8 of Hearts

The board runs out Queen of Diamonds King of Hearts Jack of Spades 8 of Spades 4 of Clubs, and Serge took the pot with his set of 8s. Sylvain improved a little on his 5th place finish from last year, and finished in 4th place for $173,209. Congratulations on your back to back final tables here at the WPT Montreal!
