Event 1: Perales FTW!

Eric Richer and Alim Perales had a pretty tight heads-up battle for a while, but eventually Perales managed to wear down Richer to the point where any good hand would require a shove.

Unfortunately for Richer, his timing wasn’t great. The players got to the flop safely enough, which came down 9 of Clubs 5 of Hearts 7 of Spades. Richer shoved on the flop holding (we found out later) Ace of Spades Jack of Clubs – but Perales was holding 6 of Clubs 8 of Clubs for a flopped straight.

The turn was very good for Richer – 8 of Diamonds – but he couldn’t keep up that momentum when the King of Spades came on the river and Perales’ straight held up.

3rd place, Nazmul Huda

After the players made their deal, Nazmul’s situation changed quite a bit – he was shorter stacked by quite a margin compared with both Eric Richer and Alim Perales. In a few hands of play he got his chips in the middle with a K, but couldn’t out-draw the Ace in Perales’ hand.

Play continues Heads up between Eric and Alim.

3rd place: Nazmul Huda, $20,291

The players have a deal

When the tournament wound down to three players, they asked the floor to stop the clock to consider a deal. AFter working with the chip counts and determining that $5K (plus the trophy) had to remain in the prize pool, the players agreed to a deal that pays co-chip-leaders Perales and Eric Richer $23,842 and pays Nazmul 20,291.

Play continues for $5K and the Full Tilt Montreal Festival Trophy

4th place, Jennifer Brooks

After losing a huge portion of her stack the previous hand, Jennifer Brooks has been eliminated in 4th place. Perales was the instrument of her elimination taking him over the 20M mark with 32.1M total chips in play.

Final Four Counts

Alim Perales has a big lead over the other three players still in the tournament.

  • Jennifer Brooks – 5.7M
  • Nazmul Huda – 2.6M

Perales takes a commanding lead

Alim Perales has more or less had his way on this final table, and took a commanding lead after this hand between he and Simon Tang.

Simon raised from the cutoff to 675K and Alim flat called from the BB.

The flop came out Jack of Spades 5 of Clubs Jack of Diamonds. Alim checked. Simon bet 875K and Alim tank-jammed his massive stack.

Simon thought for a few moments and called, turning over 8 of Hearts 8 of Spades. Alim turned over Jack of Clubs 8 of Clubs – and on that board, Simon was drawing dead with one of his outs in his opponent’s hand. The cards came out 9 of Clubs and the 9 of Diamonds to seal the deal.

Alim became the massive chip leader with somewhere around half the chips in play in his stack.

5th place: Simon Tang, $9,980.

A bust, a huge hand, and another bust

Before the players went on a short break there was an intense period of play.

First Donald Somers was eliminated in 7th place, losing his just-over-2M-stack to Nazmul Huda on his immediate left.

A few hands later there was a huge hand between the two largest stacks on the table. Simon Tang opened the betting UTG, raising to 450K. It folded around to Alim Perales in the BB who raised to 1.3M. Simon flat called.

The flop came 5 of Diamonds 10 of Spades 9 of Diamonds. Alim checked, Simon bet 975K and Alim called. The turn was the 7 of Spades and both players checked. The river was the 7 of Clubs. Alim bet 2M and Simon folded. The hand pushed Alim’s stack to over 10M in chips.

A few minutes later, Jef Roy was eliminated when he called a shove with pocket 9s. The other player showed down AJ. The flop came QTQ, turn 3, and a dirty river T to counterfeit Jef’s 99.
