  • After opening from early position to 280K, Patrick Pilote-Renaud was facing an all-in from Martin Giguere, who 3-bet shoved him remaining 675K from the big blind. Patrick eventually made the call, but found himself far behind.

Patrick: 7 of Hearts 7 of Spades

Martin: Queen of Clubs Queen of Diamonds

The board seemed good for Martin, until the river hit – 8 of Clubs 4 of Clubs 9 of Diamonds King of Clubs 7 of Diamonds – and Martin was send to the cashiers to collect his $1,920 prize.

There is a pay jump between 9th and 10th place of $680, and the prizes are starting to get very interesting given the buy-in.

    10th place: Martin Giguere, $1,920.

  • We saw 3 quick eliminations in the first orbit of Day 3 here in Event 1 of the Pokerstars Canada Cup, and we now have our ten finalists of the Event!

Edward Hakim was the first to go, as he 3-bet shoved his last 550K with 9 of Hearts 9 of Diamonds pre-flop, and was called by Patrick Pilotte-Renaud who opened utg to 280K with Ace of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds.

The board was in favour of Patrick, showing Jack of Spades Jack of Clubs 5 of Clubs 7 of Spades 7 of Diamonds, and just like that Edward’s deep run came to an abrupt end. Edward will collect $1,620 for his 13th place finish.

Shortly after, we saw Christophe Fracheboud hit the rail in 12th place, good for $1,920.

In the very next hand, Andre Vezina was all-in preflop with his remaining 490K, but his 5 of Diamonds 5 of Spades were trailing Jessie Wheatley’s 9 of Spades 9 of Clubs. The board of Jack of Clubs 6 of Hearts Queen of Diamonds Queen of Spades 9 of Diamonds didn’t help Andre, who was sent home in 11th place with $1,920.

We will bring you updated chip counts and the seating arrangements in a few minutes.

  • The first multi-day event of the PokerStars Canada Cup is coming to a conclusion tonight with Day 3 of Event 1, a $135 + $15 No Limit Hold’em Re-entry tournament that featured 4 Day 1s and attracted 1439 total entries.

There are 13 players left in the action on two tables, and there will be a full seating redraw at 10 players – i.e., when the players move to the event’s final table. The players left in the event all seem to be solid recreational players. Often in small-buy-in, large-field events such as this a few pros will make it to the end, but that is not the case this time around, so it’s really anyone’s tournament to win.

That being said Jessie Wheatley, Patrick Pilotte-Renaud, Marcel Basset, and Andrej Bachynsky do have the advantage of a significant chip lead over the rest of the field – each is over 4M while the next player has just 2.5M and down from there.

    Good luck!

    The millionaires!

We are back from break here in Day 2 of Event 1, and 8 players have managed to climb over to 1 million chip mark, with Yannick Grondin still leading the field. Here are the top players on the leaderboard, along with their approximate chip counts:

    1. Yannick Grondin – 2.17M
    2. Marcel Basset – 1.96M
    3. Joakim Beaupre – 1.70M
    4. Elaine Rawn – 1.52M

    6. Dany Giguere – 1.15M
    7. Brian Bond – 1.12M
    8. Guy Yvan Bourgouin – 1.10M

Interestingly enough, 3 of the 4 chip leaders are seated at the same table (Yannick Grondin, Marcel Basset and Elaine Rawn), which could make for some interesting dynamics in the levels to come.

Below are a few photos taken prior to the break:

  • We arrived as a huge hand was starting to brew between Michael Pitcher, in the Small Blind, and Marcel Basset, sitting in Seat 1 in the UTG +1 position.

Marcel had raised to 52K and Michael re-raised to 162K. Marcel didn’t tank for long at all before he 4-bet to 462K, and Michael responded immediately: “All In”. Marcel didn’t even ask for a count before he called and flipped over King of Spades King of Diamonds – which he knew were being met with Ace of Spades Ace of Diamonds. Marcel covered Michael by at least 300K, and he seemed resigned to his fate.

The board didn’t agree, though, and on the flop Michael was in trouble as it came out 3 of Clubs King of Hearts Queen of Spades to give Marcel the set, and the 8 of Clubs and Jack of Diamonds that made up the rest of the board were no help to Michael, who left the tournament in 47th place.

Marcel, on the other hand, is the clear chip leader in the tournament with 2.1M in chips.
