Following Guillaume’s elimination in 9th place, there was a short break to re-configure the table for 8 players (9 is an exceptional layout for the streaming table). When play resumed, cagey play continued for a few hands until Tommy raised 2x from utg+1 – and Taylor was having none of the early position raise from the most active player on the table and 3bet to 35M. Tommy thought it through and decided to call.
The flop was dealt: and the action went check-check. Things got a little more complicated all around on the turn: . On this street, Tommy chose to lead out with a bet of 27M, which found a call from Taylor. The river was the dangerous which was met by check from Tommy. Taylor took the required amount of time and then quietly, calmly said, “all-in”.
Tommy was in a pretty horrible spot with only 2nd pair on a paired board – but he insta-called… and instantly learned the bad news: Taylor was not playing Ace-high but for turned trips. Tommy’s – essentially a bluff catcher – was no good. Meanwhile, Taylor has chipped up to around the 900M chip mark with 7 players left!
8th place: Tommy Nguyen, $215,000
