Darryll Fish leads the 1B platoon

    2018/04/25 - 21:15 by Jôle Simard

Day 1B is officially in the books. Eight levels of poker were played, and some unbelievable play was witnessed. From 174 entries, the field was winnowed down to just 63 players, and all of them are done bagging their chips.

Day 1 qualifiers have already decided which Day 2 they wish to play, and that information was added to their bag in the form of a sticker. Day 2A and 2B will be held on Saturday and Sunday respectively, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, because there are three more starting flights for this $10,000,000 guaranteed Main Event, including a turbo flight on Friday night.

Many players had a great flight today; we count seven players over 6M! In the lead, Darryll Fish with 6,900,000 chips, a top pro that will surely be a force in Day 2. Jonathan Abdellatif follows, and in 3rd place is Brian Morgan, a local with a lot of experience. Ami Alibay, High Roller final tableist and also a very capable local, is in that group too, along with other big names on the international scene.

Tomorrow is Day 1C, don’t miss it!

    Khan doubles through Farrell

As the timer ticked down on the final level of Day 1B, Faizal Khan got a timely double through Niall Farrell.

With the blinds at 15K/30K, Khan opened the action from under the gun to 65K. His bet drew a call from Frank Koopman before Niall Farrell put in a raise to 175K. Farrell’s raised chased everyone but Khan and Koopman out of the pot, who each made the call, and the three players saw a flop of Queen of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 8 of Hearts. Khan and Koopman checked to the aggressor, who continued with a bet of 225K. After only a brief moment in the tank, Khan moved all in for slightly more than 700K. The check-raise forced Koopman out of the way before Farrell made the call. Hands were tabled to reveal that both players flopped top pair, but Farrell’s King of Clubs Queen of Diamonds was in a tough spot against Khan’s Ace of Spades Queen of Spades. The 7 of Clubs turn and 2 of Spades river were irrelevant blanks, and Khan got himself a timely double up.

This pot was limped by Frank Koopman before Matthew Salsberg completed his small blind with no more than a few chips to his name. Griffin Benger raised from the big blind to 180K. Koopman called, and Salsberg went all-in for less.

The flop saw no action, but Benger bet 350K on the turn, and Koopman called. On the river, Benger check folded to Koopman’s 750K bet. Was he following his instincts or was it that he couldn’t wait to go back to the Maple Leafs/Bruins game 7 on the big screen?

Board: 7 of Diamonds 5 of Spades 4 of Hearts 4 of Clubs 3 of Clubs

In any case, the fold was sound, for Koopman showed 5 of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds. Canadian pro Matt Salsberg will have to wait another day to send a stack to Day 2.

Darryll Fish and Jeffrey Cormier had a major feud pre-flop. Russell Thomas opened a pot to 55K, and Fish flat called the bet. Cormier, however, wanted to juice up the stakes a little bit, and raised it up to 185K. Thomas stepped out, and Fish did something unexpected: he 4-bet!

Cormier was now facing a 550K bet, coming from a pro who had previously flatted the initial raiser. Not the most comfortable situation to be in, but he finally decided that his hand was good enough to contest the WPT winner. All-in. Call!

Cormier: Ace of Clubs King of Clubs
Fish: Queen of Clubs Queen of Hearts

Board: Queen of Diamonds 9 of Clubs 8 of Clubs 9 of Spades King of Diamonds

Was that a top set against a nut flush draw? Cormier almost found out how to win the hard way, but as it is, that’s 5M chips to Fish!

Darren Elias was invested in a pot with Kathryn Lindsay. On the river, he put out a 625K bet, which was a slight over bet.

Board: Jack of Diamonds 9 of Hearts 7 of Spades Ace of Diamonds 10 of Hearts

Kathryn tanked for while, and called. Elias showed King of Spades Queen of Hearts. The river brought him the nut straight, and he did what the greatest poker players do, which is maximize value! He is now pushing 3 million in chips.
