Today at 12:00pm, the first event in the MILLIONS North America – the $1,000 + $100 MILLIONS Open tournament – will begin its final phase. From a total of 1,231 entries, there are just 68 players left competing for a share of the big prizes – the tournament is already relatively deep into the money. Action will begin in level 25 – blinds 300,000/600,000 with a button ante of 600,000 and will continue all the way until the end of the event.

The tournament is relatively shallow to start Day 3, with a chip average of just 30bb – although this is heavily influenced by the fact that almost 20% of the remaining field is playing a sub-15bb stack to start the day. If history is any guide, there should be a slew of quick eliminations today that will deepen the overall tournament and move things much closer to a 40bb or greater chip average before too long.

That being said, there is no dominant leader playing a monster stack. The top 8 players by count for the restart each have more than 35M in chip, led by Anthony Ruberto with 40.175M to start the day. Also among the front-runners today are two internationally renowned stars and two local heroes. Chris Moorman and Martin Jacobson are well known throughout the poker world and have world-class resumes including a WSOP Main Event championship and the wide recognition Moorman enjoys as the #1 online tournament player of all time. Joining them near the top are Jean-Francois M, a local player with significant skills and a history of winning, and Sebastien Drolet-Poitras – known affectionately as Seabass – all 4 of these players are certain to have a big influence on the game moving forward.

Good luck to everyone left at the tables today in the MILLIONS Open!

Chips are bagged and ready for Day 3

    2018/04/23 - 21:46 by Playground Poker

Day 2 of the MILLIONS Open brought out a field of 392 players, each with their sights set on the $210,000 first-place prize. But there remained a long way to go before reaching that ultimate goal, as they had to make it through 12 levels of action today before even having a chance at the big money. The top 143 finishers in this event made it to the prizes, and that was the focus for many players this afternoon- making it past the money bubble.

There was a frenetic pace to the early levels- players were taking risks to run up their stacks and that led to a steady stream of bustouts that quickly brought the field down to less than 200 players. At that point, the tournament staff balanced the tables accordingly and a large part of the day was played 8-handed. This slight change in format meant that everyone saw more hands and the blinds moved around the table a bit faster, helping induce action and increase the pressure. The later stages of today’s action also saw the introduction of the automatic clock, which helped move things along at a steady pace and prevented anyone from sandbagging and slowing down the pace of play. The pressure mounted until the field finally reached the money bubble when 144 players remained. The hand-for-hand play put the brakes on the action, but it passed after roughly 30 minutes and opened the floodgates thereafter. There were a number of short stacks in the field, each trying to wait out the others, and once the minimum payout of $2,700 was guaranteed, they were happy to take their chances with the first strong hand that came their way. Unsurprisingly, this took care of nearly a quarter of the remaining players in short order.

When the dust settled at the end of level 24, there were 66 players remaining. Anthony Ruberto emerged as the chip leader at the end of the day with 40,175,000 in chips ready for tomorrow. But there are 10 other players with stacks above 30,000,000, including notable players like Martin Jacobson and Sebastien Drolet-Poitras, so his lead is far from insurmountable.

Day 3 start tomorrow at noon and will play until there is a winner.

The field is now in the money on Day 2 of the Open, with 116 players remaining. The pace of play slowed down significantly during the last level before the break as the hand-for-hand play made for lengthy bubble.

Since their return from the last break of the day, the players have come out firing, having assured themselves of at least the minimum prize of $2,700, looking to either double up or put an end to their tournament run. The result has been a steady stream of players heading towards the tournament desk to collect their payout tickets and a number of players building monster stacks that will see them into tomorrow’s Day 3.

Hand-for-hand play lasted about 30 minutes, and saw some crazy action. Garrett Dansereau and Jean-François M. played a pot that created a new chip leader.

When we got to the table, the turn was out, Garrett had put out a 1.3M bet, and Jean-François raised to 5.5M. Garrett bumped it to 10M, and a call ensued. With over 20M in the pot, Jean-François checked the river, and when Garrett pushed 2.9M forward, he went to the tank.

The bet was very small, and with a huge crowd around the table, Jean-François made the call. Garrett instantly mucked his hole cards, and Jean-François opened:

Jean-François: Ace of Diamonds 5 of Hearts

Board: 2 of Diamonds 3 of Hearts 9 of Diamonds 8 of Clubs 6 of Clubs

Ace high! Jean-François now sits on almost 40 million in chips.

Meanwhile, Alexandre Lajoie was all-in and patiently waiting for that hand to finish. He had open shoved with 3,175,000 chips and got called by David Tazbaz. When one of the floors gave their dealer the ok, he tabled the cards and revealed the run out:

Lajoie: Ace of Clubs Queen of Hearts
Tazbaz: Jack of Spades Jack of Hearts

Board: Jack of Clubs King of Clubs King of Spades 10 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts

The turn brought Lajoie a straight, but also Tazbaz the check mark. Lajoie is our Open bubble boy, and a plethora of bust outs ensued.

Congratulations to everyone in the money!

Hand-for-hand play will be underway in a few minutes in the MILLIONS Open, as we are closing in on the 143 prizes. With the shot clock in action, the bubble should not take too long. $2,700 is the smallest prize of the payout table, and the difference between position 144 and 143.
