Event 14 – Results & Payouts

Event 14 of the Playground Winter Festival was a $60 + $10 NL Hold’em Ante Up tournament that was held on March 10th, 2015 at Playground Poker Club in Kahnawake, QC. The event attracted a total of 47 players, which generated a prize pool of $2,735.00. This prize pool was distributed according to the following table.

Note that there was a player deal in this event. With 7 players remaining, the players chose to add a payout slot (in 7th place) and re-distribute the payout amounts, and later to award those to players based on their chip position at the time. Play concluded with this second element of the player agreement.

Event 14 Champions!

Play in Event 14 reached the final table and then, after a quick elimination… it just stopped. Play continued, but the players spent well over an hour without an elimination as shorter stacks kept doubling and, except for one player, the chip counts were more or less even around the table.

Jacques St-Amour was the largest stack and had been for some time, but Jacques is always amenable to a deal, and so a deal was made. The players chose to take $380 from the first four payout slots and add a new payout slot in 7th place and increase the prize for 6th.

Even so, play continued for some time without any drastic movement, and eventually the players worked out a stack-based chop that was acceptable to everyone, and play concluded. An important part of the story of the conclusion of this event is that Event 15, the $25 Bounty tournament, was deep in the late registration period – and most players wanted to play.

There are 17 players remaining in the tournament and just three players have managed to build relatively large stacks. The leaders to begin level 11 are:

  1. Jacques St-Amour – 82K
  2. Mihail Tzonev – 72K
  3. Hani Sawaf – 66K

A lot of the players left are in the danger zone, requiring a quick double up to remain in contention.

The Ante Up tournament is moving quickly as the event is down to just 18 players remaining from the 47 who began the tourney. At the moment blinds are 100/100 while the ante is 600, meaning that at a full 10-handed table, there are 6,200 chips in the pot before a single card has been dealt.

We’ve been watching some action to try and get an idea of how people are responding to the novel structure, but the only conclusion to be reached now is that there are as many different responses as players. For some, the inflated pot encourages limping to see a flop. Others seem to be trying to play in a standard manner, while others seem to be using more of a stop-and-go mentality to get through this.

There are currently 40 players seated in Event 14, the Ante Up tournament, of the 47 that began play today. Players can still register for another 25 minutes, so that number may increase slightly.

Event 14 has begun!

Event 14 in the Playground Winter Festival is a fun tournament – it’s a $60 + $10 Ante Up tourney.

What’s an Ante Up tourney? Well, this is a format in which the blinds remain fixed at the lowest denomination of chip in play, while the antes go up every level. So, in level 1 the small blind is 25, the big blind is 25, and so is the ante – but by level 5, the blinds are still 25/25 but the ante is 150!

This kind of format is a fun departure from the normal poker tournament – and you’d better believe it changes the dynamics of the play, particularly as the event gets deeper. In level 19, the blinds will be 500/500 but the ante (put in by every player, remember) will be 3000 chips!

Late registration today is open until the end of the break after level 5 – which is a slight change from the schedule that was originally published, which provided for 4 levels of late registration. In any case, players have until 2:30 pm to enter the event.
