Michael Korovine wins Event 4

2015/03/04 1:53am by Playground Poker
Tournament: Event 4 - $330 Freeze ($300 + $30 NL Hold'em)

After dropping to 24,000 just past the bubble, where the big blind was worth 10,000, Michael Korovine was able to rebuild his stack and drive it to victory. Heads-up play with Jean-Philippe Lehoux proved to be somewhat of a challenge, as chips went back and forth for nearly an hour and a half, but in the end they all ended up on Michael’s end of the table.

In the last hand of play, Michael check-called 200,000 on a 5 of Hearts 9 of Spades Queen of Clubs flop, and then check-called the all-in when the King of Clubs came on the turn. He tabled 10 of Hearts Jack of Hearts for the nut-straight, and only had to fade 3 outs to win against the Ace of Diamonds Jack of Spades of Jean-Philippe. The river was a brick (Queen of Spades), and that sealed the win for the local hero, who collected a cool $11,500 for his victory.

Congratulations Michael!

Event 1 Champion – Jean-Francois Marin

2015/03/03 12:52am by Playground Poker
Tournament: Event 1 - The Wild $150 ($135 + $15 NL Hold'em Re-entry)

Jean-Francois came to Day 3 as the chip leader, and although his stack fluctuated throughout the night, at times falling well below the average stack, he managed to close the deal and win the opening event of this year’s Playground Winter Festival!

It took 31 hands of heads-up versus his opponent Francis Dery, and they started the battle fairly even in stacks. On the 6th hand, Jean-Francois took a chunk out of Francis, as he 4bet shoved on the flop versus a 6-million chip 3bet to get a fold out of Francis. After that, Francis was playing catchup, but never managed to rebuild his stack.

In the last hand, Francis limped from the small blind, and the two players went to see a flop. With the board showing 6 of Spades 3 of Hearts 5 of Spades, Jean-Francois check-raised all-in and found a snap call. He tabled 6 of Clubs 7 of Diamonds, and needed some help to overcome Francis’s Queen of Diamonds Queen of Spades. The Jack of Diamonds on the turn changed nothing, however the 4 of Spades on the river gave Jean-Francois a straight, awarding him the pot, and the first place prize!

Congratulations!
