    Event #9 Champion: Jean-Francois Stoycheff

    2018/05/22 - 5:08 by Shawn McCrory

The closing event of the May Power Weekend, the 6-Max 50/50 Bounty, brought out a huge field of 171 players. The action-inducing format – 6 players per table, each with $100 bounty chips – surpassed all expectations and made for a lively and raucous atmosphere in the tournament hall.

The players filled the room quickly at the beginning of the evening, and many of them left almost as fast as they arrived. The bounty chips went in the middle early and often, causing the field to shrink surprisingly quickly. The tournament staff handled it all in (rapid) stride, as they balanced and broke tables at high pace to keep everything running smoothly.

Hadi Ghattas bolted out of the gate to run up a triple-average stack before the first break, and he managed to maintain his momentum all the way to the final table. Most of the other players at the final table found ways to stay alive during the early levels and then capitalized when good spots came their way as the blinds increased in the later stages. Glen Duncan, Jean-Francois Stoycheff, Richard Johansen and Andreas K had stacks that were close to average for most of the early levels, but they each found ways to capture chips during the critical late stages when the field was down to less than four tables.

The play at the final table was tight and conservative for the most part, with the notable exception of a short span when three players – Richard Johansen, Andreas K, and Anderson Frank-Graham – were eliminated in one orbit.

In the end, it came down to Glen Duncan and Jean-Francois Stoycheff, who were nearly even in chips when their heads-up battle began. Stoycheff managed to gain the chip lead by taking down a number of small pots, but before long Stoycheff and Duncan had decided that instead of trying to grind out the win, they might as well gamble instead. So the two agreed to move all-in before even receiving their cards; it was a blind flip with the tournament win on the line! And it was over on the flop when Stoycheff flopped the nuts, leaving Duncan only runner-runner to chop, but Stoycheff’s flopped straight stood tall, giving him the win.

It turns out to truly have been Stoycheff’s night. He only decided to play this event at the last minute after busting out of Day 3 of the Playground 200. He had made a deep run in the three-day event but was ultimately eliminated in 19th, earning him $1,040 and sending him spinning into the next available tournament, the 6-Max 50/50 Bounty. Although he may still be disappointed at coming up short in the Playground 200, he can be proud of his results; a deep run in a multi-day event and an outright win in a popular bounty event are each respectable achievements, and accomplishing both in the same day is certainly something to brag about. Congratulations!

    Event #9 Champion: Jean-Francois Stoycheff, $4,264

With the blinds at 30K/60K, Richard Johansen was eliminated in fifth place following a dramatic three-way all-in.

After Andreas K was reduced to less than a big blind on the previous hand, Richard Johansen opened the action to 200K with the hope of capturing another bounty uncontested, however, Glen Duncan raised all-in. Johansen felt that he was behind but decided that this was the spot to take a chance, and he called off his stack.

Johansen: Ace of Hearts 8 of Clubs

Duncan: Jack of Hearts Jack of Clubs

Andreas: King of Hearts 7 of Spades

Board: 4 of Spades 4 of Clubs King of Diamonds 10 of Clubs 3 of Diamonds

Andreas K tripled up his micro stack, and Duncan sent Johansen to the rail in fifth place. Johansen will collect $770 for the final table appearance.

Although Andreas K had managed to win the previous hand, he was still on life support and moved all-in on the following hand, when his luck finally ran out. Andreas will collect $1,000 for the fourth place finish.

Anderson Frank-Graham was the next player eliminated, only a few hands after Johansen and Andreas. It came down to a flip for Frank-Graham who ran his Ace of Spades Jack of Hearts into Jean-Francois Stoycheff’s pocket twos. The chips went in before the flop, and Stoycheff flopped his set, leaving Frank-Graham drawing thin. The turn and river provided no help, and Frank-Graham hit the rail in third place, earning him $1,650 in the process.

The are now five players left in contention in the 50/50 6-Max Bounty. Frank Johansen has the chip lead, but with the chip average providing roughly 20 big blinds, everything can change quickly.

Hadi Ghattas finally ran out of gas at the final table. He had maintained one of the larger stacks in play throughout the evening, but he was just eliminated in sixth place by Frank Johansen.

With the blinds at 15K/30K, Johansen opened the action to 75K. Glen Duncan made the call before the action arrived at Ghattas, on the button, who moved all-in for over 300K. Johansen quickly moved all-in to isolate, forcing Duncan out of the pot.

Johansen: Queen of Clubs Queen of Spades

Ghattas: Ace of Clubs Queen of Hearts

Board: King of Hearts 8 of Hearts 10 of Hearts 8 of Diamonds 3 of Spades

It was a helpful flop for Ghattas, but he was unable to find any of his straight, flush or pair outs and was eliminated in sixth place. He will collect $640 for the deep run.

    Marco out in seventh

Peter Marco was the first player to leave the final table.

When the blinds reached 12K/24K, Marco moved all-in from under the gun for his last 211K. He picked up calls from Jean-Francois Stoycheff and Hadi Ghattas, giving Marco the potential to triple up. The flop, King of Clubs 2 of Clubs 4 of Spades, elicited a quick check from Ghattas and an even faster all in from Stoycheff. Ghattas made the fold, and hands were tabled.

Stoycheff: King of Diamonds Queen of Hearts

Marco: 6 of Clubs 6 of Hearts

The King of Spades turn and 2 of Diamonds river gave Stoycheff the pot and another bounty chip. Marco will collect $550 for the seventh place finish.

The players in the 50/50 6-Max Bounty have just arrived at the final table.

The seven finalists are relatively deep, with the chip average providing roughly 30 big blinds. Anderson Frank-Graham, Hadi Ghattas and Andreas K control the largest stacks, but everyone who made it this far has a realistic shot at walking away with the win.
