    May Power Weekend News

    Event #9 Champion: Jean-Francois Stoycheff

    2018/05/22 - 5:08 by Shawn McCrory

The closing event of the May Power Weekend, the 6-Max 50/50 Bounty, brought out a huge field of 171 players. The action-inducing format – 6 players per table, each with $100 bounty chips – surpassed all expectations and made for a lively and raucous atmosphere in the tournament hall.

The players filled the room quickly at the beginning of the evening, and many of them left almost as fast as they arrived. The bounty chips went in the middle early and often, causing the field to shrink surprisingly quickly. The tournament staff handled it all in (rapid) stride, as they balanced and broke tables at high pace to keep everything running smoothly.

Hadi Ghattas bolted out of the gate to run up a triple-average stack before the first break, and he managed to maintain his momentum all the way to the final table. Most of the other players at the final table found ways to stay alive during the early levels and then capitalized when good spots came their way as the blinds increased in the later stages. Glen Duncan, Jean-Francois Stoycheff, Richard Johansen and Andreas K had stacks that were close to average for most of the early levels, but they each found ways to capture chips during the critical late stages when the field was down to less than four tables.

The play at the final table was tight and conservative for the most part, with the notable exception of a short span when three players – Richard Johansen, Andreas K, and Anderson Frank-Graham – were eliminated in one orbit.

In the end, it came down to Glen Duncan and Jean-Francois Stoycheff, who were nearly even in chips when their heads-up battle began. Stoycheff managed to gain the chip lead by taking down a number of small pots, but before long Stoycheff and Duncan had decided that instead of trying to grind out the win, they might as well gamble instead. So the two agreed to move all-in before even receiving their cards; it was a blind flip with the tournament win on the line! And it was over on the flop when Stoycheff flopped the nuts, leaving Duncan only runner-runner to chop, but Stoycheff’s flopped straight stood tall, giving him the win.

It turns out to truly have been Stoycheff’s night. He only decided to play this event at the last minute after busting out of Day 3 of the Playground 200. He had made a deep run in the three-day event but was ultimately eliminated in 19th, earning him $1,040 and sending him spinning into the next available tournament, the 6-Max 50/50 Bounty. Although he may still be disappointed at coming up short in the Playground 200, he can be proud of his results; a deep run in a multi-day event and an outright win in a popular bounty event are each respectable achievements, and accomplishing both in the same day is certainly something to brag about. Congratulations!

    Event #9 Champion: Jean-Francois Stoycheff, $4,264

Mathieu Boucher treats himself to a win!

    2018/05/22 - 2:32 by Jôle Simard

The Playground 200, over several Power Weekends, has become an established event. The format is a great blend of classical structure and a modern take on tournament poker, one that brings online and live poker together.

There were four Day 1s, including one online, and 133 players came back on Sunday afternoon for Day 2. Out of that number, just 20 made it to the final day, tonight’s Day 3.

Play was fast at the beginning, and from the 3 starting tables, players were soon confined to 2 short-handed tables and playing for a spot on the Playground 200 final table and its big prizes.

Once our finalists were decided, the game was about dodging Mathieu Boucher’s attacks and earning some pay jumps. Boucher is an experienced tournament player who knows exactly what to do when given a massive lead. He took no quarter and steam rolled the table with incessant raises.

Sébastien Morrissette won an almost embarrassing amount of all-ins, against Boucher and others, to earn a spot in the last triangle. Gianfranco Giordano played solidly, knowing what Boucher was up to but lacking the chips to do something about it. The 3 of them played 3-way for quite a while. The two short stacks, one after the other, found hope of taking the lead but Boucher did not crumble, and even after giving some chips back, he kept the pressure on and busted Giordano.

The heads-up match that ensued was very short lived. Only a few hands were played, most of which were won by Boucher uncontested, until Morrissette 3bet all-in. Boucher had two scraps of paper, but made the correct mathematical call (full hand below).

Congratulations on taking down the Playground 200 of the May Power Weekend!

    Playground 200 Champion: Mathieu Boucher – $21,036

    Runner-up: Sébastien Morrissette – $16,140

Event #8 Champion: Normand Plessis Belair

    2018/05/21 - 20:30 by Shawn McCrory

Event #8, the $60 + $10 NL Hold’em Single Rebuy, brought a field of 70 runners, enough to easily surpass the $3,000 guarantee for this event. The action was predictably aggressive for this type of tournament, but only 13 players took advantage of the re-buy option.

Play at the final table was particularly snug, but things opened up once the blinds reached 8K/16K. Following a flurry of eliminations that quickly reduced the field to three players, Victor Soumis, Brigitte Metivier and Normand Plessis Belair, who agreed to an ICM chop of the prize pool. Although Soumis had controlled the biggest stack for a large part of the final table, by the time negotiations had started Plessis had taken over the chip lead and got the lion’s share of the prize pool according to the ICM chop.

Not long after the chop was concluded, Soumis hit the rail as a victim of unfortunate timing. Soumis moved all-in from his button during three-handed play, and Metivier, who had warned him that she would defend her blind without looking at her cards, woke up with aces and made the snap call. Soumis’ King of Clubs 10 of Diamonds came up short even though he managed to make two pair, as the low card on the board paired, counterfeiting his hand and giving Metivier the win with aces-up.

The heads-up battle between Plessis Belair and Metivier began with the two playing nearly the same amount of chips, but Plessis Belair ran hot and soon found himself with a 3:1 chip lead. From there, Metivier started turning up the pressure with a series of pre-flop all-ins, forcing Plessis Belair to fold each time. But before long Plessis Belair woke up with big slick and was waiting for Metivier to move all-in, making the snap call when she did. Metivier found her hand, Ace of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds, dominated and got no help from the board, giving the win to Plessis Belair. He collected an additional $300 for the victory, on the top of the $1,066 from the ICM chop. Congratulations!

Event #8 Champion: Normand Plessis Belair, $1,366

The players have returned from their second break of the day and play continues in level 9. While the players were absent from the tables, we surveyed them to find the biggest stacks that have been accumulated so far and found 3 players over 80K, including chip leader Alexandre Menard.

There are just 32 players left spread around 4 tables.

Our 50/50 Bounty Champion: Martin Dufour

    2018/05/21 - 5:56 by Jôle Simard

Tonight’s event was a 50/50 Bounty that attracted a staggering 245 players. 31 of them got paid, but many more went home with their money back or a small profit from the collected $100 bounty chips.

The money was reached without any hand-for-hand play after 2 players busted simultaneously, and from there the eliminations came in at a fast pace, until the tournament moved to a 2-table affair. After so many fast busts, it was natural to see the progression slow down, and this moderation was supported by the fact that players where trying to play low-risk poker to earn a seat in the finals.

The last table was eventually reached, and provided a good amount of drama. Frédéric Normand mistook a bounty chip for a regular chip, and threw it in as a call. The bounty chip, however, is always an all-in bet and that mistake cost him the second largest stack in play.

Alex Plourde collected the chips apologetically. Shortly after, he beat Michael Frenkel with a twin hand that had one difference: it was suited! The backdoor flush completed.

Plourde started the night strong and never looked back. He appeared on many leaderboards, showed up on the final table as the chip leader and remained in that spot until Martin Dufour came along.

Dufour was the smooth operator of the night. He remained undetected for the longest time, always lurking just below the leaders’ pack and always focused. He had the chance to knock out players in 4th and 3rd position, which allowed him to face Plourde with some munitions. After a double-up and a few more pots, they opted to reduce the money difference. $500 were left up top and they chopped the rest of the money.

Dufour, however, seemed to have the upper hand, and kept his momentum going. Plourde’s stack was crumbling, and he had a little over a million when the last hand went down. It was a pre-flop all-in showdown, and when the last card was revealed, Dufour was crowned champion.

    Congratulations to both players!

Our 50/50 Bounty Champion: Martin Dufour – $4,780

    Runner-up: Alex Plourde – $4,280

Playground 200 Day 2 seating draw (with counts)

    2018/05/19 - 19:48 by

The three Live Day 1s and single online Day 1 in the May Playground 200 are now complete, and over the 4 starting flights there were a total of 635 entries. Of that total, 133 players qualified for Day 2 in the event. Although players had the right to play in multiple Day 1s and attempt to qualify for Day 2 multiple times, no one accomplished this in this edition of the Playground 200. Therefore, no “double stacks” have been retired from play and the restart will begin with all 133 players arranged at the tables according to this seating draw.

Day 2 gets underway at 12:00pm tomorrow and play will continue through 10 levels of 40 minutes each. Blinds will be 1,500/3,000 with a button ante of 3,000 when play resumes.
