6th place – Jean-Pascal Savard ($45,690)

A hand that seemed quite inconsequential quickly became the definitive hand of the tournament for Jean-Pascal Savard, who got it on in a 4 of Hearts 3 of Spades 2 of Spades flop only to be met with a snap call from Jean Francois Bouchard. The hole cards were exposed.

Jean-Pascal: Jack of Clubs Jack of Hearts
Jean Francois: Ace of Spades 4 of Spades

Jean-Pascal was in the lead, but not comfortably so considering Jean Francois had a pair and a flush draw. He hit the flush on the turn – 8 of Spades – and in a case of “overkill” made meaningless trips on the river 4 of Clubs.

Six-handed play has so far been extremely rapid with chips moving in all directions. Eric Afriat has doubled through Jean-Pascal Savard and taken a nice pot from Mekhail, Tam Ho took a some chips from Ema Zajmovic, and Mekhail stacked a bunch of chips he received from Jean Francois Bouchard.

If this pace continues, it could wind up with some big lead changes and perhaps even some early eliminations.

By the way, now that the Official Final Table has been reached, blind levels are 60 minutes in length.

Play has resumed in the WPT Playground and right off the bat, Mekhail has doubled up through Ema Zajmovic.

Mekhail Mekhail

Tam Ho opened the action with a raise to 90K, and Mekhail shoved over the top for 655K. Ema made the call and Tam folded.

Mekhail: King of Spades King of Diamonds
Ema: Ace of Spades Queen of Diamonds

Mekhail was ahead, but a single card could change all of that. Unfortunately for Ema, that card never came on the board of 6 of Spades Jack of Diamonds 10 of Hearts 2 of Hearts 4 of Spades.

Ema is still in decent shape with a stack of around 2.4M while Mekhail is now playing over 1.3M.

There are just 6 players remaining in the WPT Playground – and with 6 players left on the World Poker Tour, that means that the Official Final Table has been reached.

The seating draw will continue from play earlier in the day – there is no redraw – but there has been a short break to re-set everyone’s position at the table evenly as well as to pose for final table photographs and the like.

Play will resume in just minutes and play to a conclusion today.

7th place: Danny Li ($38,280)

  • Level: 26

  • Ante: 5K
  • Chip Average: 1.9M
  • Remaining: 6

Danny Li wasn’t particularly short-stacked, nor was he under any out-of-the-ordinary pressure due to his position on the table relative to the others or anything of the sort. Nevertheless, he seemed to have been a little anxious to build his stack.

In the hand in question, action folded to Danny in the cutoff and he chose to shove all-in – Tam Ho (who still has a huge stack) instantly called, and before the cards were even turned over it was apparent that Danny was in trouble.

Danny: King of Hearts 10 of Clubs
Tam: Ace of Clubs King of Spades

The community card runout would have to be pretty special to work in his favour, but on the King of Diamonds Jack of Spades 6 of Spades flop and then the 4 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts turn and river… the better hand stayed in the lead and Danny hit the rail in 7th place.

The tournament has now paused for a few minutes as preparations are made for the Official 6-handed WPT Final Table.

8th place – Carter Swidler ($31,200)

  • Ante: 5K
  • Chip Average: 1.6M
  • Remaining: 7
  • Entries: 380

Carter Swidler had been nurturing his relatively small stack all day, picking up a blind and ante or two along the way but not scoring the huge game-changer he needed. On his button, Carter was facing an opening raise to 85K by Jean Francois and chose to go all in over the top. Jean Francois made the call.

Carter: 10 of Spades 10 of Hearts
Jean-Francos :King of Spades King of Diamonds

Carter was way behind and could not catch up: Jack of Diamonds 2 of Diamonds 6 of Hearts Ace of Diamonds 8 of Clubs

8th place: Carter Swidler, $31,200.00
