Players in Day 1A have just completed their final break of the day and at this point there are quite a few players that have managed to build large stacks, though only one or two might be considered truly dominant so far. Play will continue this evening through 3 more full levels, following which the remaining players will bag up their chips to return to play on Day 2 (Wednesday November 1st at 7:00pm).

Players who haven’t qualified – or even players that have, but would like to try to build up a bigger Day 2 stack – are welcome to play each or all of the remaining 3 flights in the tournament! Day 1B gets underway at 7:00pm tonight while Days 1C and 1D will be held on the Monday and Tuesday evening respectively.

Larry Robinson busted just a few hands after the end of the last break, and Guy Carbonneau was sent to the rail just a few moments ago, so now the tournament continues without either of these hockey legends as play progresses though level 11 on the way to the end of level 14 on this first of 4 starting flights in Strangers in the Night event.

Players will notice that the tournament structures in almost all of this year’s Playground Poker Fall Classic events is a little bit different than in past Classics – we’ve implemented the button ante for all 16 side events. The one exception to this new rule will be the WPT® Montreal itself, which will follow the time-proven traditional WPT structure with “normal” antes.

An increasingly popular feature in big tournaments, “button ante” simply means that the player on the dealer button pays the equivalent of the whole table’s worth of antes on each hand. For simplicity’s sake, during the bulk of tournament play, the amount of the button ante is set as the amount of the big blind. There are a couple of exceptions related to the size of the button ante:

  • In level 1 of each tournament, there is no ante
  • During each level of play prior to the first break in a tournament, the button ante amount will be the small blind amount, not the big blind amount.
  • Later in a tournament, if the entire tournament is short-handed, the TD will call for the button ante to be reduced to the small blind value. Please wait for the TD to announce this reduction if it is to be applied.
  • In 6-Max games, the button ante will be the small blind value throughout the tournament.

Carbonneau & Robinson both still in

  • Level: 9
  • Small Blind: 400
  • Big Blind: 800
  • Button Ante: 800
  • Chip Average: 39.3K
  • Remaining: 122
  • Entries: 240

The players in Event #1 are on their second break of the day and while they were away we were able to find that although many players are approaching the 100K level, only two players so far have surpassed it and taken the lead: Tina S with 133,600 and Michel Naggar with 104,600 in chips.

Our celebrity hockey host Larry Robinson is still alive in the tournament – though only barely. He’ll come back from the break with just 2,000 chips left in his stack. Guy Carbonneau is in better shape – he’ll begin level 9 with 28,600 chips.

Good luck!

The first break in the first tournament of the Fall Classic has just wrapped up, and even at this early stage in the tournament there are a few players that have managed to put some distance between themselves and the field. In fact, the leader to this point, Manon Lucsanszky, has over 4x the starting stack!

The final count of entries today is 240, which is a strong number that will set the tone for the rest of the tournament.

Today’s first flight of the Strangers in the Night tournament has reached the end of level 4, which is to say that players are now on their first break of the day. Registration will close at the end of this 15-minute break, at which time the final number in this first of 4 starting flights in the event will be final.

Here are a few more shots of the field today including Guy Carbonneau, who took his seat during level 4.
