2014 WPT Montreal Champion: Jonathan Jaffe!

Jonathan Jaffe finished runner-up in the 2008 WPT – World Poker Finals – in Mashantucket, and was determined not to finish in second place again. He came in to the final table as the chip leader, and although he saw his stack swing throughout the night, he inevitably found himself with all of the chips in play.

Heads-up play with opponent Ratharam Sivagnanam last quite a while, and both players held the lead at multiple occasions. Following a big pot won by Jonathan that left Ratharam with less than a quarter of the chips in play, Jonathan began applying pressure on the short stack. Ratharam responded to his aggressive opponent by limp-shoving a marginal hand, only to run into a monster.

After making the call, Jonathan tabled Ace of Clubs King of Clubs, and needed to hold versus Ratharam’s 8 of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds to become the champion. The board ran out 4 of Spades 3 of Spades 6 of Hearts Jack of Hearts Queen of Hearts, and with that, Jonathan won the tournament, the Hublot watch, the Monster headphones, an entry to the WPT World Championship, a place on the WPT Trophy, a Playground Poker Fall Classic Main Event Belt, a whopping $446,800 in cash, and, last but not least, bragging rights!

Ratharam’s second place finish earned him a prize of $313,318.

Congratulations!

Mukul Pahuja has had a lot of success here in Montreal, as he finished 2nd in last years WPT Montreal. He was trying to improve on that result this year, but ended up falling a little short of his goal, placing in 3rd out of the 732 player starting field.

In the last hand, Mukul picked up a premium for 3-handed play and found all his chips in the middle, but he was called by an even bigger hand. His Ace of Clubs Queen of Hearts was dwarfed by the King of Spades King of Clubs of Jonathan Jaffe, who managed to make a full house on the King of Hearts 7 of Spades 2 of Diamonds 2 of Spades 8 of Clubs to eliminate Mukul.

We are now heads up between Jonathan Jaffe and Ratharam Sivagnanam!

Kevin: King of Diamonds 10 of Clubs

Jonathan: Ace of Clubs Queen of Clubs

Jonathan had Kevin drawing dead by the turn, as the community cards brought were Ace of Diamonds Queen of Diamonds 8 of Clubs Ace of Spades 7 of Clubs, ending Kevin’s third title hunt.

Ratharam Sivagnanam 3-bet to 430,000 after Samuel Chartier’s open to 175,000 from under the gun. Samuel elected to 4-bet his 2,475,000 stack, and was quickly called by Ratharam.

Samuel: 7 of Hearts 7 of Diamonds

Ratharam: Queen of Hearts Queen of Spades

Samuel couldn’t improve on the Ace of Clubs 8 of Hearts 3 of Diamonds 9 of Hearts 9 of Clubs board, and was the second Montrealer eliminated from this final table.

Guillaume Nolet, who came to this final table with just over 2 million in chips, got involved in a big pot versus Mukul Pahuja. On a flop showing 2 of Hearts 3 of Diamonds 5 of Hearts, Mukul check-raised all-in, and found a call from Guillaume.

Guillaume: Ace of Hearts Jack of Hearts

Mukul: 5 of Spades 6 of Spades

With two overs and a flush draw, it was nearly a flip, but the running 10 of Diamonds 8 of Spades ensured Mukul his double up, crippling Guillaume to just 1 big blind.

On the very next hand, he found himself all-in and trailing, as his 9 of Diamonds 4 of Clubs had to overcome the Ace of Diamonds Ace of Hearts of Jonathan Jaffe.

The board brought no help to Guillaume, showing Queen of Diamonds Jack of Spades Jack of Clubs 3 of Hearts Queen of Clubs, and Guillaume was our first player eliminated from this final table.

6th place: Guillaume Nolet – $90,350

In a preflop war with Ratharam Sivagnanam, Phillip Hui and his remaining ~1,500,000 chips found themselves all-in and needing help.

Phillip: Ace of Spades Queen of Hearts

Ratharam: Ace of Diamonds King of Clubs

Phillip managed to pair his queen, but Ratharam then ran a flush to scoop the pot on the 2 of Diamonds 2 of Clubs Queen of Clubs Ace of Clubs 8 of Clubs board.

With that elimination, our official final table of the 2014 WPT Montreal is now set! We will be publishing the official chip counts shortly.
