There’s always a lot of activity come bubble time, and a few short stacks have doubled in the past 30 minutes while a few other players have lost big chunks of their stack to the point that surviving the bubble is now in question.

Some impressions on the tables we’ve been looking at:

  1. TJ Ulmer has notched up the aggression considerably and has chipped up accordingly, and has won his pots almost entirely before showdown.
  2. Brian Yoon is also playing quite a few hands, and made a pretty sick pot-sized value bet a few minutes ago holding just a 7-high flush.
  3. Alexandre Lavigne lost half his stack when he tried to take a pot with a healthy bet on the river only to be check called by his opponent, who held pocket 9s (good for middle pair considering the board that had run out).

Just 95 players remain in the tournament.

The players in the WPT Montreal are now back from their dinner break and with 104 players remaining, the tournament is now in full bubble mode. There are just 14 players to be eliminated before the rest of those in the event are all in the money!

We’ve covered the top of the leaderboard in another post, but since the dinner break is 45 minutes long, we had time to gather counts for some other players in the event.

Mukul bags two big ones

  • Level: 16
  • Small Blind: 2K
  • Big Blind: 4K
  • Ante: 500
  • Chip Average: 196.1K
  • Remaining: 112
  • Entries: 732

We just saw a huge hand between Mike Leah, the chip leader to start the day, and Mukul Pahuja, who just moved to the table.

Mike opened to 10K from the highjack and Mukul 3-bet to 23K from the button. Action was back on Mike, who went all-in for 175K more.

Mike: King of Spades Jack of Spades
Mukul: Ace of Diamonds Ace of Clubs

The board runout gave Mike a pair on the flop: Queen of Diamonds 6 of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds but the turn 3 of Clubs and river 7 of Clubs didn’t bring the suckout and Mukul stacked the chips.

On the very next hand, Mukul opened the action preflop from the cutoff. On a board of King of Spades 5 of Hearts 6 of Hearts 3 of Hearts 2 of Diamonds, he called Matthew Grocholsky’s bets on all three streets, including his river shove of 100K – only to table the nut flush, Ace of Hearts 10 of Hearts.

Mukul has effectively doubled up on the two hands, and is now the clear chip leader in the tournament with around 800K.

Significant moves

  • Big Blind: 4K

Tables have been breaking at a regular pace as players are eliminated from the event and tournament staff keeps things balanced, and there are two recent table moves that could be significant.

First, last year’s runner up in the event Mukul Pahuja has moved to a table that includes Todd Terry, who has been among the chip leaders all day – but also Connor Drinan, Mike Leah, and Mike Watson. So not only are there a ton of chips on the table, but some very experienced and talented players.

The other move of note is that Marc-André Ladouceur has moved to a table that includes Michael McDonald and Eugene Katchelov.

Antonio Esfandiari has made a different kind of significant move – he has been chipping up all day and is now approaching 400K, which puts him in the top tier at this point in the event.

Here are the current chip leaders in the tournament. There’s still a long way to go today, and the tournament is still around 60 players from the bubble, but the big stacks are going to start to exert real dominance over their tables as the number of players remaining ticks downwards…

  1. Alexis Urli – 495K
  2. Marc-André Ladouceur – 459K
  3. Gianluca Cedolia – 385K
  4. Nenad Sizgoric – 371K
  5. Samuel Chartier – 353K
  6. Mukul Pahuja – 340K
  7. Todd Terry – 340K

Piquette out

  • Level: 13
  • Small Blind: 1K
  • Big Blind: 2K
  • Ante: 300
  • Chip Average: 115K
  • Remaining: 191
  • Entries: 732

Double Belt-winner Jean-Philippe Piquette has been eliminated from the event. He started the day with a very small stack, which he managed to grow somewhat while staving off elimination in the early rounds, but finally he got his stack in the middle holding Ace of Diamonds Queen of Clubs while Jonathan Barrette re-shoved with Ace of Clubs King of Diamonds.

The board was dealt: 3 of Diamonds 9 of Spades 9 of Clubs and then the turn King of Spades, which sealed it for JPP. The river was a (frustrating) Queen of Spades, and Jean Philippe hit the rail.

First break leaders

  • Small Blind: 1K
  • Big Blind: 2K

The players in Day 2 of the WPT Montreal have returned from their first break of the day and we took the opportunity to update the top of the leaderboard while players were away from the tables.

  1. Marc-André Ladouceur – 450K
  2. Alim Perales – 358K
  3. Alexis Urli – 321K
  4. Todd Terry – 320K
  5. Jeremie Damrat – 317K

Some of the players eliminated in the first two levels today: Lucas Greenwood, Daniel Smith, Daniel Kelly, Ami Alibay, Byron Kaverman, Logan Dunn, Jeff Madsen, Jonathan Roy, Erwann Pecheux, Guillaume Rivet, Kitty Kuo, Tony Dunst, Brian Rast, and Matt Marafioti.

  • Big Blind: 1600

  • Chip Average: 89.6K

Jonathan Roy has been eliminated from the tournament after a 3-bet all-in from middle position, which was instantly called by a player holding Queen of Hearts Queen of Diamonds. Jonathan had a lower pair – 6 of Clubs 6 of Spades – and got no help from the run-out of the board.
