As Day 1A was drawing to a close, the big stacks started to gobble up the small stacks, and Scott Woodard continued his fearless play. While many players were simply waiting out the last few hands of the day, Woodard showed everyone that he still had his foot on the gas pedal.

With less than 10 minutes left to play in the day, Woodard opened from the cut off to 5.5K and got called by Cory Garrison Jones, immediately to his left, and both blinds. Woodard c-bet 12K on a 8 of Diamonds 5 of Diamonds 5 of Spades flop, only to have Jones raise all-in for 50K. Woodard made the call after only a few seconds of reflection and tabled 6 of Hearts 6 of Clubs. Jones turned over his cards to show Queen of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds. Woodard faded the overs and the flush draw as the board ran out King of Hearts 7 of Spades and scooped a big pot to bring his stack up to 241K.

34 players remained as the final buzzer sounded to bring Day 1A to a close. Here are the chip leaders:

We’re now down to 56 players as Day 1A is on it’s final break of the day. Two of the early big stacks remain on the leaderboard as the players prepare for the final stretch of this opening flight.

    Soucy maintains momentum

Christian Soucy, who held the chip lead earlier in the tournament, showed no signs of slowing down as he busted yet another player. Christian was holding 9 of Clubs 9 of Spades while Jonathan Hatch-Chenard had 5 of Diamonds 5 of Spades.

The seemingly innocuous flop of 9 of Hearts Ace of Diamonds 5 of Clubs turned out to be a minefield. The action blew up when the 10 of Hearts appeared on the turn and the players got it all-in. The river brought out a harmless 8 of Clubs and Christian added to his already significant stack.

58 players now remain as we approach the final break of the afternoon.

    Giguère out

Joel Giguère has been eliminated during level 9 of today’s Day 1A. Giguère is a talented local player who has made some deep runs in recent events and is becoming increasingly well-known in the community of regular players.

Frederic Gagné opened the action from middle position to 2,400. Jacques Martineau, in the small blind, and Giguère, in the big blind, both made the call. The three players saw a flop of King of Diamonds Ace of Clubs 4 of Hearts.

The flop play was standard: both players in the blinds checked to the original raiser who followed up with a c-bet of 2,500. Martineau found the fold button while Giguère made the call. The turn brought out the King of Hearts and set up some explosive action. Giguère checked to Martineau who continued his line with a bet of 5k.

Giguère then raised all-in and was quickly called; Gagné tabled King of Clubs Queen of Hearts for turned trips. Giguère knew he was drawing thin by the speed of the call and reluctantly showed his Ace of Diamonds 10 of Diamonds. The river was an irrelevant 5 of Spades and Giguère hit the rail.

Event #1 allows for re-entries on subsequent day 1s so anyone who didn’t advance through Day 1A can try again this evening, tomorrow or Tuesday evening to compete for a share of the prize pool of no less than $100,000.
