Event #5 Champion – David Bonneau

    2018/01/22 - 20:38 by Shawn McCrory

David Bonneau is the champion of Event #5, the Deepstack Turbo. Bonneau capped off a great run by eliminating half of the final table on his way to victory. The players had made a deal when they were playing 5-handed so the hands that followed the deal were each all in pre-flop, which tends to happen in any turbo tournament notwithstanding a deal. Bonneau, playing with an overwhelming chip lead, bested David Mackenzie McNeil in heads up play. McNeil had led the tournament for a significant part of the later levels, but he ran out of gas at the final table. The final hand of the tournament went all in before the flop, and both players stood to watch the run out.

McNeil: Jack of Spades 9 of Clubs
Bonneau: Queen of Diamonds 3 of Diamonds

Board: 8 of Clubs 6 of Clubs 2 of Spades 8 of Hearts Ace of Spades

Queen high was good, and a new champion was crowned, David Bonneau!

Event #5 Champion: David Bonneau, $1,500.00

2nd place: David Mackenzie McNeil, $1,180.00

    Last hand of play

Sorgente out in 4th, Layoun finishes 3rd, Bonneau and McNeil play heads-up for the trophy

After the deal was struck, the bustouts came in quick succession. David Sorgente hit the rail in fourth when he moved all in with King of Clubs 5 of Hearts and was called by David Bonneau, the chip leader, with Queen of Spades Jack of Diamonds. It was all but over on the flop: Queen of Diamonds Jack of Hearts 7 of Spades. The turn, the Ace of Hearts, gave Sorgente a glimmer of hope, but the 2 of Clubs on the river was no help and he left in fourth, taking with him $1,070.

Brahym Layoun was Bonneau’s next victim. They got it all in before the flop when Lahoun shoved from the button and Bonneau snap called from the blind. Lahoun sensed that he was in rough shape from the speed of the call, and his suspicion was confirmed when Bonneau showed Queen of Diamonds Queen of Hearts. Lahoun reluctantly tabled Queen of Clubs 9 of Diamonds. The board was 6 of Diamonds 3 of Diamonds 8 of Spades 10 of Clubs 8 of Hearts. The gutshot straight draw on the turn offered a brief sweat, but Bonneau never looked concerned. Lahoun finished in third and took home$1,370.

Play is about to resume following a break at the final table. The players agreed to make a deal just before the break, so everyone is in good spirits and the jokes are making their way around the table almost as quickly as the cards. The players are still competing for some prize money ($250) and the champion’s trophy.

David Bonneau has just spiked his latest two-outer to send another player to the rail. The mood at the table is lighthearted, as the players just agreed to an ICM chop. But the trophy is still up for grabs, and each player left would love to leave with it along with the bragging rights that come with being an event champion.

The latest bustout, Jean Pierre Leclair, was in good shape when the hands were tabled. He moved all in with 9 of Clubs 9 of Spades and was called by Bonneau with 7 of Diamonds 7 of Clubs. The flop, 4 of Diamonds 10 of Clubs Ace of Hearts, and turn, Queen of Clubs, were safe for Leclair but he couldn’t fade the 7 of Hearts river.

The players have agreed to make a deal at the final table of Event #5. After checking the ICM (independent chip model) numbers with the tournament staff, consensus was immediate. The players agreed to take a proportional share of the prize pool according to their stacks and to leave $250 to play for in addition to the coveted trophy.

Michel Lacasse has become Brahym Lahoun’s latest victim. Lacasse was down to only a handful of blinds when action was folded to him on the button, and he moved all in. Lahoun, who continues to run hot at the final table, woke up with Ace of Diamonds King of Diamonds, and Lacasse’s Ace of Clubs 6 of Diamonds proved to be no match. The window card on the flop, 6 of Clubs, gave Lacasse reason to celebrate. But it was short lived, as the dealer revealed the King of Hearts right behind it. The full run out was King of Hearts 2 of Diamonds 6 of Spades 10 of Hearts 9 of Hearts.

Lacasse left in sixth place and took $560 with him.
