    Event #17 Champion: Stephane Bedard

    2018/02/01 - 4:54 by Shawn McCrory

The $330 Bounty is a consistently popular tournament and this edition kept up the tradition. This closing tournament of the 2018 Playground Winter Festival brought 135 players to the felts, building a prize pool that easily surpassed the $30,000.00 guarantee.

Bounty hunting was the theme of the early levels, as the $100 bounty chips enticed players to try everything to bust out their opponents. Play continued in this fashion until the field narrowed down to three tables. From there the mantra “tight is right” seemed to take over as the players dug in and waited for strong hands; the hunt for bounties became an afterthought once the prize money was on the horizon. Every decision then became a painstaking calculation.

In the end, Stephane Bedard outlasted all the others. Even after an ICM chop was negotiated when three players remained, Bedard stayed focused on his goal: the Champion’s trophy. After Bedard eliminated the third place finisher, Alberto Dumitru, it was a heads-up match between two Playground regulars, Bedard and Ben Menache. They traded a few blinds back and forth before Menache decided he had a good hand to gamble with and called off his stack to Bedard’s pre-flop all in. It was King of Spades 10 of Clubs for Bedard and Jack of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds for Menache. Neither player connected with the board and Bedard’s king high was good enough for the win.

Bedard is a seasoned poker veteran who is well known in the local poker community who was playing for pride and the trophy more than the prize money. And as the champion, he gets all three! Congratulations!

Event #17 Champion: Stephane Bedard – $5,230.00 and the champion’s trophy

Runner up: Ben Menache – $4,995.00

The final three players – Ben Menache, Stephane Bedard and Alberto Dumitru – agreed to an ICM chop of the remaining prize pool. According to the deal, Menache will receive $4,995.00, Bedard will get $4,630.00 and Dumitru will take $4,200.00. There is an additional $600.00 that will go to the eventual winner along with the champion’s trophy.

Not long after the deal was concluded, Bedard and Dumitru got it all in before the flop.

Bedard: King of Clubs 10 of Hearts

Dumitru: Ace of Clubs 10 of Diamonds

Board: 7 of Hearts King of Hearts 7 of Diamonds Queen of Clubs 6 of Diamonds

Although Dumitru lost as a favourite, he should be pleased with the deep run as he was down to only two big blinds when two tables remained.

    Lortie finishes 4th

Christian Lortie had the chip lead for most of the evening, but his luck just ran out at the final table. Lortie had lost most of his stack on the previous hand, and he moved all in for a handful of blinds from the button. Ben Menache, in the big blind, made the call and hands were tabled.

Lortie: King of Spades 7 of Clubs

Menache: King of Hearts 9 of Hearts

It was a dream flop for Menache; 10 of Hearts 2 of Hearts 7 of Hearts. Lortie needed a lot of help, but the 9 of Clubs turn did not deliver and Lortie was drawing dead, making the 4 of Hearts river was a formality. Lortie will collect $2,680.00, in addition to the many bounties he collected, for his fourth place finish.

Yan Touchette has been eliminated in fifth place in a dramatic three-way all in. Touchette had his stack crippled on the previous orbit when he doubled up Ben Menache. With the blinds at 30K/60K, Touchette moved all in from under the gun for his last 160K. Alberto Dumitru, to his left, made the call before Christian Lortie moved all in from the small blind. Stephane Bedard then moved all in from the big blind, and Dumitru was forced to fold. The players rose from their seats as hands were tabled.

Touchette: Queen of Clubs 9 of Clubs

Lortie: Ace of Spades 4 of Spades

Bedard: Queen of Spades Queen of Diamonds

The board, 5 of Hearts Jack of Hearts 7 of Spades 5 of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds, posed no threat to the queens and let Bedard more than triple his stack. Touchette will take home $2,030.00 for his fifth place finish.

Tony Stratopoulos has just been eliminated in sixth place. Stratopoulos played tight throughout the final two tables, but the cards simply wouldn’t cooperate, and he fell victim to bad timing. The action had folded to Stratopoulos on his button when he looked down at Ace of Diamonds 7 of Hearts and moved all in. Unfortunately for him, Christian Lortie woke up with Ace of Hearts King of Spades in the small blind and went all in over the top. And it was just about over on the flop of Ace of Clubs King of Clubs 6 of Spades. Resigned to his fate, Stratopoulos rose from his chair to watch the 3 of Clubs turn and 8 of Spades river hit the felt. Stratopoulos will collect $1,540.00 for his sixth place finish.

Shailesh Patel, who finished third in the $250 Frenzy, had been among the chip leaders for most of the night, but he ran out of momentum once he reached the final table. Having lost few pots just prior to the final table, Patel was relatively short stacked once the blinds reached 15K/30K. His last hand was a battle of the blinds; Patel moved all in from the small blind with 9 of Clubs 10 of Diamonds and got called by Christian Lortie in the big blind with Ace of Clubs 3 of Diamonds. The board, 6 of Spades 5 of Diamonds 3 of Clubs 2 of Hearts 5 of Clubs, gave Lortie a pair and sent Patel packing. Patel earned $1,170.00 for his seventh place finish
