    Day 1A wraps up

    2018/01/15 - 18:58 by Shawn McCrory

Play has ended for today with 6 players bagging chips for Friday’s Day 2. The bubble burst when Sebastien Proulx, who made a remarkable comeback from the brink of elimination, busted Christian Barrett. When the players went all-in pre-flop, the cards revealed a familiar race; middle pair against big slick. Proulx’s 7s took a nearly insurmountable lead when he flopped his set. There was no runner-runner to save Barrett, who rivered a trivial king, and left in seventh place.

The Crazy $80 offers three more day 1s with unlimited re-entries during the first four levels of play so there are lots of opportunities to try to join today’s qualifiers.

Sebastien Proulx has made it back from the brink of elimination. In a remarkable turn of events, Proulx just eliminated Christopher Wilcox in eighth place and is now holding over 200K in chips. The final table action picked up pace dramatically as strong hands kept colliding, leading to a series of all-ins before the flop. The most recent was when Proulx woke up with Ace of Clubs Ace of Hearts and got it in against Wilcox’s Ace of Hearts Jack of Spades. Despite the jack-high flop, the turn and river posed no threat to the overpair, and Proulx’s hand stood.
Play now continues on the bubble.

Shortly after the final table began, we saw a 3-way all-in preflop with two players at risk. Two players, Daniel Mackay and Sebastien Proulx, were the short stacks at the table. After an early position limp, Proulx moved all-in for his last 14K, only to have his neighbour, Mohamed Ben Yahia, raise to 30K. Mackay, in the small blind, had few options with less than 10K in chips left, so he decided to join them and moved all-in.

Mackay Ace of Diamonds 9 of Hearts

Proulx King of Spades 10 of Clubs

Ben Yahia Ace of Clubs Queen of Spades

The board ran out 6 of Hearts 3 of Clubs King of Hearts 5 of Diamonds 4 of Diamonds.

Proulx’s king stood and he tripled up his stack while Mackay was busted in tenth place.

We are down to 12 runners as the bubble creeps up on the horizon. The action will continue until 10% of the starting field remains; 6 players will advance from this first flight.

Most players are around the stack average of 95,000 with the notable exception of the chip leader, Steve Carriere, who is now sitting on 252,500 in chips.

The action heated up in level 13, and Steve Carriere continued to accumulate chips.

With the blinds at 1K/2K, Carriere found himself on the button in a 3-way pot, having raised a limper to 6.5K and picking up a call from the big blind along the way. The flop came Queen of Clubs Jack of Hearts Jack of Spades and the action was checked to the button. Carriere bet out, only to be check-raised by the original limper. Carriere raised over the top and they got it all-in. Hands were tabled; Carriere showed Ace of Spades Jack of Clubs, for trips, and his opponent rolled over  Ace of Clubs 10 of Spades, drawing to a gut shot to scoop the pot. The turn was a 9 of Hearts, giving his opponent more outs, but the river was a harmless 6 of Clubs, and Carriere added to his chip lead.

14 players are now left at the mid-point of level 14.

    20 players left

As this flight enters its third break, 20 players still have chips. The average stack has over 30 big blinds in play, leaving lots of room to maneuver. 6 players will qualify for Day 2 so play will likely tighten up once we reach the final table.

All the players who built big stacks in the early going are still in the field, and we have a new chip leader: Steve Carriere.
