    2018 Playground Winter Festival News

The Champion of Event #6: Alain Lavoie

    2018/01/23 - 23:11 by

Event #6 in the 2018 Playground Winter Festival was a $50 + $10 + $50 NL Hold’em 50/50 Bounty tournament that attracted a solid 115 players, generating a “traditional” prize pool of $5,577.00. The prize pool also included one $50 Bounty chip per player, but the distribution of bounty chips is not tracked.

The day proved to be a long one and featured several huge chip runs by players along the way, but there was one player who was among the leaders throughout the day: Paul Brunet. He was in the first leaderboard after just 4 levels of play, and stayed near there all the way to the final table.

At that time, Alain Lavoie was among the small stacks on the table, but after some favourable hands, Lavoie found himself at the top of the heap, playing heads up against Jean-François Santerre. Santerre’s journey was a little more direct – he was under the radar for much of the day, but as the tournament got deeper he chipped up considerably to the point that he was the chip leader with 7 players remaining.

In heads up play, the two players were even for a while, but then Lavoie managed to win a few consecutive hands – one in particular made Santerre a big underdog… and then the final hand. Lavoie limped, prompting Santerre to shove all in and he found the call. The cards were turned over and Santerre was dominated.

Lavoie: Ace of Diamonds 7 of Clubs
Santerre: King of Hearts 7 of Diamonds

The board ran out and didn’t hit either player: 4 of Hearts 4 of Diamonds Jack of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 4 of Spades and Lavoie was the champion!

Champion of Event 6: Alain lavoie – $1,357.00 and the Champion’s Trophy

    Runner-up: Jean-François Santerre – $1,035.00

    Event #2 Champion Jason Mottershead

    2018/01/19 - 18:05 by

After only a few hands of heads up play comprising no major shifts in the chip distribution, Jason Mottershead has won The Crazy $80, Event #2 in the 2018 Playground Winter Festival.

Both heads up players – Mottershead and Francis Dery – played a model final table; indeed, a fantastic final three tables. Both players were driving the action, making the plays, bringing the game – and it served both of them well all the way along as they were both able to chip up in bursts by eliminating others and staying out in front of the ever-growing blinds as the day wore on.

The final hand was pretty standard stuff. Francis acted first in the button/sb and chose to open shove his King of Spades 7 of Clubs. Jason looked at his cards and very calmly and quietly uttered the fateful word: “call”. He flipped over Jack of Hearts Queen of Clubs – and both players waited for the flop.

Flop: Queen of Diamonds 7 of Spades 4 of Hearts

Something for both players, but only the most optimistic would be overjoyed to have caught the 7 of Spades on that board. And such optimism would have been misplaced – the turn was the 8 of Hearts and the river a meaningless 2 of Clubs. Jason Mottershead had won.

A word about Jason Mottershead. He has been visiting Playground Poker Club for festivals since the very beginning, and has had countless Day 2 qualifications, deep runs in single-day tournaments, and otherwise dominating performances. However, until today, he had never actually won a festival event at Playground Poker Club. So a little extra dose of congratulations are in order!

Event #2 Champion: Jason Mottershead, $3,900.00

    2nd place: Francis Dery, $2,900.00

    2018/01/19 - 13:53 by

We know that poker players play for prize money above all, and secondarily the opportunity to outwit and outplay other players in an event – players who can become quite friendly over time on a tournament table.

But it’s universal – everyone LOVES a trophy as well! We’ve awarded some amazing ones over the years, and the 2018 Winter Festival trophy is no exception!

    Event 3 Champion: Ian O’Shaugnessy

    2018/01/19 - 4:58 by Jôle Simard

Event 3 was the first 1-day Event in the Winter Festival 2018. It was a $150 + $30 + $150 NL Hold’em 50/50 Bounty, a formula that is most appreciated by our pool of players. The $30,000 guaranteed boasted by the house was easily met by the 149 players that showed up.

All evening, bounties were hunted and collected, and some finalists displayed their kills with pride. Patrice Primeau, who led through in-money play, kept his on his stack, as if to show where his chips came from. Primeau was very nicely stacked all the way to 3-handed play, but then Ian O’Shaugnessy came for him. The pressure was palpable, and soon enough he was leading the Event. Then he flopped a nut straight against Primeau’s open-ended.

Patrice Primeau: 9 of Hearts 6 of Diamonds
Ian O’Shaugnessy: Queen of Spades 9 of Clubs

Board: 10 of Diamonds Jack of Clubs 8 of Diamonds 3 of Hearts Jack of Diamonds

The chips went in on the turn, and Primeau couldn’t find a chopping queen. O’Shaugnessy was now the overwhelming chip leader, and although he lost a flip to Giovanni Giannitti on the following hand, the next one spelled Giannitti’s elimination in 2nd place. Giannitti raised to 225K, and that bet was met by a shove. Giannitti called (full hand pictured below).

O’Shaugnessy looked like the most comfortable hunter on the final table, and as soon as he found an ace on the river against Bob T to save his tournament life, he never looked back.

    Congratulations!

    Event 3 Champion: Ian O’Shaugnessy – $5,269.00 and the Champion’s Trophy

    Runner-up: Giovanni Giannitti – $3,910.00

    3rd place: Patrice Primeau – $2,950.00

Champion of Event 1: Yu Chen Chen

    2018/01/19 - 1:11 by Jôle Simard

Event 1 was the kickoff event of the Winter Festival 2018. It attracted 670 entries, which took place across 4 Day-1s. The guarantee was missed by a few thousand dollars, and as a result, our players benefited from a tasty overlay. A total of 127 players managed to qualify a stack for Day 2.

Albert Nguyen, the leader at the start of Day 2, made it to Day 3, but was taken out first, after a few minutes of play. Nicolas Laliberté started Day 3 with the most chips, but had to settle for a 7th place finish.

Charles La Boissonnière and Yu Chen Chen impressed many on the final table, with their incessant jabs and overall solid play. La Boissonnière was eliminated in 4th after losing a flip to Hodhod. Bérard followed him – he was the victim of a 3-outer on the river.

The heads-up match, with $3,150 and the Winter Festival trophy on the line, lasted for quite a while. Hodhod was the most successful for a while, grinding Yu Chen down, and again after doubling him up. But eventually, Yu Chen got a hold of his heads-up game, and the match became much more even. They swapped a small lead a few times, until a series of winning hands put Yu Chen in the driver’s seat.

He did not let go, and it is with a firm grip on the match that he went on to claim victory. The last hand was an open-shove from the button by Hodhod. The flip was won by Yu Chen (full hand pictured below). As per the concluded deal, Hodhod took down $15,000, and Yu chen took $18,150.

    Congratulations!

Event #2 Day 2 seating draw (with counts)

    2018/01/18 - 22:48 by

After the four Day 1s that ran from Monday to Thursday there are 28 players that have qualified to begin Day 2 on Friday. These 28 players represent the top 10% of each starting day, and in a tournament such as this, which pays 10% of the field – this means that everyone on Day 2 will cash. Payouts will be made according to the table located following the seating draw table.
