    Event #9 Champion: Ami Alibay

    2018/01/25 - 1:53 by Jôle Simard

Event #9 served as a prelude to the Playground 1000, the Main Event of the Winter Festival 2018 that begins on Friday. The $550 Freeze was a 1-Day Event with a $500 + $50 buy-in, and lasted more than 14 hours.

The tournament attracted 115 players, among which a few pillars of the local poker scene were spotted – Patrick Braga, Charles La Boissonnière, Ruben Perceval and Shaan Siddiqui, to name a few, joined the Event with hopes of adding another trophy to their collection.

The prize pool was initially split into 12 payouts, but the last 14 decided to reduce some of the variance by paying 2 more spots, and took the money off the top 3 positions to do so.

Nick Nickoletopoulos (9th place) almost pulled a rabbit out of his hat. He was down to 6,500 chips, or less than a big blind, and in just 2 hands, went up to over 100K. Although he was one win short of truly coming back in the game, it did get him one extra pay jump.

After Nickoletopoulos’ elimination, things moved pretty fast. Bouchard was decimating anything that stood in his way. Ami Alibay, most likely the most experienced tournament player on the table, was the only one who could dodge Bouchard’s fury throughout the final, but got to the heads-up with about 650K to Bouchard’s 1.7M.

Soon enough though, Alibay’s deep run experience – this is his 6th trophy – started to pay off. The 2 finalists played small ball poker, trading small pots, with Alibay getting just a little bit more here and there. As the heads-up match advanced, Bouchard showed some signs of fatigue, mixed with some annoyance from the bad timing he had to deal with.

They took a break about midway through the duel, at which point they were about tied. This is when they re-arranged the prizes to reduce the variance. They secured $10,550 each, and were playing for an extra $1,600, plus the Champion’s Trophy.

After the break, Alibay put his foot on the pedal. He quickly took a lead and used it to lean on his opponent with a lot of weight, and eventually got a 3 to 1 lead. The last hand saw Bouchard go all-in from the small blind and Alibay make a call with a dominating hand. Although the flop presented great possibilities for Bouchard, the best hand held.

    Congratulations to both!

It is trench warfare on the final table of the $550 Freeze, where Sylvain Bouchard and Ami Alibay have been battling for almost an hour. They did take a 15-minute break during that time, at which point the stacks were almost back to even. Since then, Alibay won a few more pots, and is now at about 1.4M to Bouchard’s 900K.

Janine Bibbs, after doubling against Ryan Parsons, went all-in from the small blind. Sylvain Bouchard was in the big blind, and woke up with a calling hand, to say the least:

Janine Bibbs: King of Spades Queen of Spades
Sylvain Bouchard: Ace of Clubs King of Hearts

Board: Ace of Hearts 4 of Diamonds 2 of Hearts Queen of Clubs Ace of Diamonds

When Bibbs (5th place – $4,610) saw the flop, she stood and gathered her things, with a smile, proud of her performance. Well done!

Four hands later, in yet another blind battle, Ryan Parsons was taken out in 4th place ($6,030). In this hand, the chips went in post-flop – on the turn, to be precise.

Ryan Parsons: 6 of Clubs 4 of Clubs
Sylvain Bouchard: 10 of Hearts 6 of Hearts

Board: Jack of Clubs 10 of Clubs 6 of Diamonds 4 of Hearts Jack of Spades

What a set-up! Parsons had a dream hand considering 4-way play, or period for that matter, having 2 pairs and a flush draw. Bouchard had 2 better pairs, and performed his second knockout in the same orbit.

Parsons fought well all day. Great job!

Following that elimination, Bouchard did not take a break. He raised from the button, and called when Jacques Berthiaume went all-in from the big blind.

Berthiaume’s King of Diamonds 9 of Diamonds hit the flop, but Bouchard’s Ace of Spades 4 of Spades went on to complete a runner-runner broadway straight. Berthiaume takes $7,615 for his 3rd place finish.

    Congratulations!

David Cadoch was the next player to leave the final table. He moved his relatively short stack, less than 10 big blinds, all in from the button after the action had been folded to him. Ryan Parsons, in the big blind, made the call and hands were tabled.

Cadoch: Ace of Hearts Queen of Clubs

Parsons: King of Spades 4 of Diamonds

The board, 2 of Clubs 3 of Hearts 9 of Spades 5 of Clubs 6 of Diamonds, gave Parsons a backdoor straight and Cadoch left in seventh, taking home $2,690.00 in the process.

Mingzhe Zhang was eliminated shortly after Cadoch. The action had been opened by Ami Albay in early position, and Zhang, on the button, raised all in. The speed of the call told Zhang he was in trouble, despite holding a strong hand, 10 of Spades 10 of Clubs. Albay showed Ace of Hearts Ace of Diamonds and Zhang’s fears were confirmed. The board, 5 of Spades King of Hearts 2 of Hearts 8 of Hearts Jack of Spades, did not connect with either hand, and Zhang left in sixth. The deep run earned Zhang $3,520.00.

Two players were just eliminated from Event #9 in back to back hands.

Facing an opening raise from Sylvain Bouchard in early position, Nick Nickoletopoulos pushed forward all his remaining chips and was quickly called. Bouchard immediately tabled Ace of Hearts Ace of Diamonds and Nickoletopoulos reluctantly showed 3 of Clubs 3 of Hearts. The board, 4 of Diamonds 10 of Clubs Ace of Clubs 3 of Spades 10 of Spades, improved both hands but Nickoletopoulos came up short and left in eighth place. The deep run earned him $2,050.00.

    Nick Nickoletopolous

Sofiane Boulila, the low stack at the table, was the next player to hit the rail when he looked down at 9 of Diamonds 9 of Clubs and moved all in from early position. The player in the big blind, Ryan Parsons, made the call with Ace of Diamonds 8 of Diamonds. The flop, 7 of Diamonds Queen of Hearts 3 of Spades, was safe for Boulila but the turn, Ace of Hearts, sealed his fate and the river, Ace of Spades, provided unnecessary confirmation.

    10th place: Maxime Marcouiller

    • Level: 21
    • Small Blind: 8K
    • Big Blind: 16K
    • Button Ante: 16K
    • Chip Average: 256K
    • Remaining: 9
    • Entries: 115

    2018/01/24 - 22:40 by Jôle Simard

When Maxime Marcouiller raised all-in from the cut-off, he was called by Mingzhe Zhang from the button, and they went to showdown:

Maxime Marcouiller: Jack of Clubs 10 of Diamonds
Mingzhe Zhang: King of Clubs Queen of Hearts

Board: 9 of Clubs 7 of Spades 2 of Spades 2 of Hearts 3 of Diamonds

King high stood tall, and Marcouiller was eliminated in 10th place, worth $1,190.

    Congratulations!
